Either way, based on the gist of what you are saying, democracy relies on the fact that the majority of people will vote for what is best for the majority. Sadly, I don't think the person ever heard the saying that people are intelligent but a mob is as clever as it's stupidest member.
Pure, inflexible systems fail. The right mix of democracy, socialism, capitilism and even a bit of communism would make for a better populace.

A lot of the problems with early democracy was solved when we got this thing called a constitution. The mob wasn't allowed to infringe on someone's rights merely because they had the numbers or shouted the loudest.
It's not a perfect system, naturally, but it's the best we've found so far. What are the alternatives? Fascism? Monarchy? Anarchy (in the traditional sense)? Theocracy? No thanks.

Okay well, ignoring all the tinfoil-hat nonsense, that view of democracy is clearly antiquated. Those points listed under Republic is what we today describe as being a democratic country. That's why we have constitutions, to protect from mob-rule, and because citizen's rights aren't up for public vote.
