Thread: Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

Default Can anyone tell me if this is normal?

Okay so my router states this for SnR and attenuation.

    and the speedtest is this.

I am currently on a 4mb shaped line with Mweb.
On average my dl speed is about 400kbps
I live in Kyalami and we have just gotten fiber optic cable installed throughout our complex, although there is still a copper connection from my house to the Telkom box on my street.

    Help is really appreciated.

The only abnormal thing here is you are using mweb. There are many terrible things in this world, mweb is one of them.

All that it is showing is that your physical connection is very good and can sustain higher speeds. You paying for a 4MB service from mweb and as such will receive those speeds. Its like using a 1MB uncapped account on 4MB line thinking you will get 4 meg speeds.

As Peon said, your speed is limited by your 4Mb ADSL package. Your noise margins are very low though, which could cause your line to be unstable, if this happens, get telkom to lower your connection speed, as the noise margin goes up when speed goes down. Above 6db is should be fine, but try get it above 10db if you experience issues.

As for this I (and a lot of other forum members) can't agree less. I've had no issues with Mweb, and it is largely thanks to them that uncapped connections are now affordable, so they really can't be that terrible.

    +100

MWEB has been nothing but a major player when it comes to making the internet more and more affordable in the country. They're the highest rated ISP on myBB, and the community presence is amazing to boot, though I have never needed to use it.

@OP - Your connection speed at 22mbps is absolutely amazing, maybe get a free 1gb unshaped account from afrihost and try another speedtest? I have a feeling that you're on Telkom's new speed upgrade list.

I'm still sitting on 4mb, but 4mb of uncapped is plenty for now

The router is not translating the speed correctly. The actual speed test is the one to believe. The upload speed is a bit on the low side. Try it again at 22h00

The Afrihost 1gbs have run out. Is there any other company that offers them? And will I have to change settings on my router to be able to quickly test the unshaped.

Go to afrihost prepaid, not per month and ask for 2 gigs then or 1 gig? They can't run out

I'm not sure what you mean? Is this a prepaid account. You can always top up on prepaid or on normal capped. Everytime you top up a prepaid account, it becomes valid for another additional year.

Send me a PM so I can help out.

That was a limited offer. But, if you transfer your ADSL line to Afrihost, and you do not have any active ADSL products, we automatically assign you a Free GB account.

You'll pay less than what you are currently paying to Telkom, plus a free account. WIN, WIN!!

I've had a few connection issues while using mweb's uncapped products, but it was resolved very quickly and their service is good. I used a *******@mwebdsl.co.za username, apparently that was the problem, I should've used *******@mweb.co.za as my username.

I agree with what has been said before regarding the physical connection and the download achieved. Nothing to complain about there. It does remind me though that it is good practise to run speed tests occasionaly especially as ADSL upgrades are rolling out at the moment. It may also be a good idea to re-boot your router every few days so that if the line has been updated you can get the benefit of it. Anywho your ISP is going to limit you to the bandwidth that you are contracted for. Warmest regards Tim
