Thread: DCS World. A serious combat flight sim

At the end of the day we're talking about entry level joysticks here, and I suppose you have to decide what you want to go with. The Force 3D has good force feedback, the Cyborg otoh does not have ff at all. The deadzone is a big issue to me, but I have read some other complaints of Cyborgs not lasting that long.

If you are serious about sims, maybe get either one of the two as a stop gap before moving onto a more robust flight system.

PS: Penquin, how much would it cost to build one's own IR-LED ? I see Landmark Computers have the TrackIR 5 with the headclip for R2800 +
My setup doesn't use any IR-LED's and does exactly the same thing, you just need a bit of ambient light and a webcam. Preferably a PS3 Eye, because op the high fps it captures video at. I use my PS3 eye and Facetracknoir.

It tracks your face and quite accurate I might add, after a bit of tweaking and sensitivity adjustments. Probably not as accurate as the TrackIR, but hey, it's free!! I can't compare as I've havent used TrackIR yet. I've tested the head tracking in Wings of Prey, IL2 and Shift 2 so far, works good. Takes a bit getting used to moving your head to change FOV.

Oh, and I got my FLY 5 from Esquire for about R400ish about a year ago.

Agreed, no complaints yet with my FLY 5, but it's purpose is only to serve as a stop gap till I can save up for something proper. As for now I'm happy with it. I did not want FF and the customizability, dual throttles and fold away design made me go for the FLY 5 in the interim

OMS Penquin, I just happen to have a PS3 Eye cam that I don't use in the bottom drawer of my desk at home. Will be sure to put this use. As for the joystick, I'm still undecided. The FLY 5 does look kick ass though. Just want to verify force feedback is just like vibrations in the stick itself ?

And thats the bottom line, cause StoneCold said so...

Vibrations on the stick, and actual forces applied against the axis. The amount of force applied generally varies between different joysticks.

I'll also queue it tonight, but I'll first have fly a bit before and get used to it before I crash and burn in multiplayer.

It's more fun when you crash with friends watching.

Default DCS World. A serious combat flight sim

Just to note that A 10 is available on steam for only $16 for a limited time. Steam serial key also works perfectly in dc world.

I'm also trying facetracknoir but its simply too jittery with an normal facecam at 30 FPS. My saitek aviator joystick is not good enough as it does not keep calibration.

In my opinion to get the most out of this sim it is essential to have a good joystick and a trackir 5.
Thats why im planning to get a CH fighterstick HOTAS and the trackir over the next 3 months - fighting with setup and inputs for facetracknoir and the saitek keeps me from enjoying and learning the sim.

I'm considering donating a kidney for a TM warthog HOTAS, as its "only" R 6800 through takealot!

Damn, now you tell me about the $16... Bought it from DCS site last night at the regular price hehe

I'm itching to get the Logitech G940, I see it's around for just under R4k. It also had a great review from SimHQ, and I reckon they take these things seriously!

I'm also learning the ropes. Been going through some training but it takes a bit of time for everything to sink in. At least had my first successful landing, so that's a start I guess.

Let me know if and when you guys are ready to go down in flames :P

Umm, A10 is $40 in Steam on my side

Unless it was $16 on the Steam Summer Sale, which sadly ended already. I thought you guys were talking about DCS World, but one can most likely purchase A10 as add-on, I think someone did mention it in the thread earlier. I'll still require a joystick first. I'll probably not buy something decent till I have a lot of time on my hands in the future, so I must decide and decide quickly between the Force 3D and the FLY 5. I'm sooo freaking amped to play a flight sim game again, feels like I'm in back in primary school when I wanted to become a fighter pilot one day

Well, to be fair, my Logitech Force 3D is of an older generation and they may have sorted out some issues that came up with the one I have.

And no worries, I'll fly the SU-25 with you too.

Just been focusing most of my attention on the hog since things get rather complex quite soon. I prefer not taking it on in "Game" mode since I don't want to get lazy. I also keep failing an instruction for a level turn, think I'll have better luck if I can set trim along with having force feedback so I don't have to focus on 30 million things at once trying to keep pitch, velocity, altitude and bank steady XD

Never mind operating the damn thing, there are a bunch of checklists to add to immersion. Got a handy Android app with all the checklists I think I may need Just need time to study it all, might have to quit the day job hehe

If all goes well and there is enough interest, we could probably even start a myBB Air Force!

Yeah, i bought it a week back on steam - lucky i guess.

I'm taking it slow, practised to do a cold start a lot so im reasonably ok with it now.

Failing with landing atm. But as soon as i'm reasonably comfortable in the cockpit ill be available for some sorties.

Be advised, google G940 reversal bug. There is a fix, but requires you modding the stick and throttle. Some say that it is still useable with the bug and that you get used to it. Just wanted to give you a heads up before you shell out the cash.

As soon as we can all start the engines, we're ready to fly. We'll learn stuff as we go.
