Q1 yes - use what you suggested. The dust won't do anything really.
Q2 no - rat poison in a ceiling should be a standard fitting. Rat will become rats very quickly. Can't even believe you're contemplating the idea of living with a rat... Remind me never to come have dinner at your place

I had more than a couple of these "cable breaks" - most of them I just twisted together and insulation taped. Some I went the extra mile and soldered. I notice no difference over short distances (longest span is prob 20m) network still going along at full gigabit speeds.

Lol I doubt you would notice one rat in the zoo I already have

I think I'm going to be lazy and just rejoin the pair that has broken.

get rid of it now. the glenwood area in durban has a serious problem with rats at the moment. they are all over apparently and i've had so many of these bastids in my house they have destroyed stuff. eaten cables, munched my one kitchen cupboard to nothingness. i'm going to have to redo my kitchen soon. they eat your food, leave droppings all over the place. they are a health hazard.

rats are pests and unless you get rid of them they will continue to breed and be a problem. all these rat traps on the market don't work, trust me i've tried so now i just poison the f'ers.

If you're going to just twist the wires together, do yourself a favour and solder the wires while you're busy. Besides offering a better connection, it also means next time you're stumbling round the roof and kick the cable accidentally you're not going to rip the cable apart. Use some heat-shrink or insulation tape around each wire.

Also you can get 'humane' rat traps and then release him somewhere else. But really, it's a pest, you know what needs to be done.
