Thread: CRIME TIPS/STOPPERS

    Default CRIME TIPS/STOPPERS

I thought I would start a thread in which members could post some tips on how to prevent becoming a statistic.

If you hear the sound of running water outside your house in your yard in the middle of the night, please don’t open the door to investigate it’s a scam, robbers open the outside taps at night and when you go out to investigate they enter the house of their victims to rob and even rape them.

I have copied a mail recieved and it goes like this:

    VIN NUMBER - WARNING!
So simple, I would have NEVER thought about someone doing that!!!!
Here is INFO worth the price of your car.... WHAT WILL the car thieves THINK OF NEXT?
The car thieves peer through the windshield of your car or vehicle, write down the VIN# from the label on the dash, go to the local car
dealership and request a duplicate key based on the VIN#.
I didn't believe this e-mail, so I called Chrysler-Dodge, GM & Ford and pretended I had lost my keys. They told me to just bring in the VIN#, and they would cut me one on the spot, and I could order the keyless device if I wanted. The Car Dealer's Parts Department will make a duplicate key from the VIN #, and collect payment from the thief who will return to your vehicle.
He doesn't have to break in, do any damage to the vehicle, or draw attention to himself. All he has to do is walk up to your car, insert the key and off he goes to a local chop shop with your vehicle.
You don't believe it? It IS that EASY.
To avoid this from happening to you, simply put some dark tape (electrical tape, duct tape or medical tape) across the VIN Number Metal Label located on the dashboard.
By law, you cannot remove the VIN, but you CAN cover it so it can't be viewed through the windshield by a car thief.
I urge you to forward this to your friends before some other car thief steals another car or truck.

The South African Banking Risk information Centre (SABRIC) is urging all banking customers to be wary of a fraudulent scam that is currently making its rounds locally.

Perpetrators are posing as a cell phone company representative who trick unsuspecting customers into switching off their cell phones, while they attempt to perform fraudulent transactions on the unsuspecting customer’s bank accounts.

According to the SABRIC, by getting banking customers to turn off their cell phones, customers do not receive any necessary communication or notifications from their banks during the time of the fraudulent transaction.

Your VIN number is also printed on your license disc. Putting tape on the dash won't help.

Surely the dealers would keep some kind of record of whoever spends cash on purchasing a random set of keys from them? Replacement keys are generally not cheap. I think this is a good heads-up, but IMHO not the most likely way in which a car will get stolen.

If you leave your tap running for the entire night, JHB water would probably rob and rape you come month end.

I heard that if you find empty cans of cooldrink outside your house it's a warning sign too. Not sure how true that is.

Just rename this thread to the paranoid hoax thread

Moral of the story? Never buy Chrysler or Ford.

In reality it doesn't work that way.

Oh cool, every spam chain mail in one thread.

Another one I got was that they were selling keyrings at the engen with built in tracker chips or something. So they could track you down and rob you...

Or that they burn CD's into your window which makes you sleep right through the burglary.

I've heard if you leave your front door unlocked and opened it means you are about to get robbed.
