Default What makes your job worth while?

EDIT: As a prequel ... your salary is not a valid reason for this thread ... maybe for another thread ... but not this thread.

I've been reading threads from the music section and I've just realised (after 6 years) how much joy I get working with kids.

Now, If you were a kid and you knew me ... I give you a structured time in class ... but I give you enough time to enjoy computers because that is what sustains your enthusiasm for this industry.

But sometimes I indulge myself (and kids ... they are easily entertained) and play grade 1-3 kids songs through my PC speakers (strong enough for a class). The delight on their faces for something so dismissable as Kurt Darren's "Kaptein" really gives me mental energy.

If I continue to play Katy Perry's "Hot n Cold" I usually make their day.

I expected you to say something like that.

    No, is the honest answer.

This thread has actually been initiated by some people's disdain for Kurt Darren's songs at an artistic level.

I just realised that he has struck a real cord with many people across South Africa, young and old with this song. The impact that this song has is quite wide-spread.

To be brutally honest, what makes my job worthwhile is solving the problems....

Thats unfortunately happening less and less lately, so now its mostly my salary which lets me indulge in my other hobbies outside of work.

The fact that someone places me in a position to solve problems other people couldn't. It makes me feel like I'm actually useful and can get stuff done.

    Also money.

Well let's see. During the day I write and try perfect a code base thats sole aim is to take money from South Africans.

While writing said system of Beelzebub I am clocking, like a lot of people out there with a similar job, more than 60 hours a week (100+ when a deadline looms) and can be called at any time of the day when stuff goes wrong. My job doesn't save lives, feed orphans or make the world a better place. It collects money so that our president and his vice president can spend ridiculous amounts of it on private jets, pay for Selebi's medical bills and fund some "much needed" holidays.

So, do I do it because it makes me feel good? Not really, but it pays very well. And I get a lot of experience which makes my skill set "sought after", which in turn leads to more money. If being a firefighter paid well, I'd be doing that.

Money = happiness (you should see the smile on my face when it's pay day...it's like an evil grin)

Honestly, while I'm with you for the most part, I find that there are more important things in my life than money, as of late. Money is a means to an end, absolutely, but you only need so much while living reasonably. Since I've started becoming more...comfortable shall we say, I find that I'd probably not go for a job that offers R10k more a month but has harsher working hours or less stimulating work. Priorities are shifting. I suppose when I have kids and the bills get larger every month, I may start becoming a greedy bastard again, but that's still a few years off. Who knows what'll happen between now and then.

I have met people & experienced things that i doubt would have been in other fields.
Our pay / benefits are great, work itself is boring beyond belief, but its the non job specific things that make it all worthwhile & interesting.
