Thread: Decrease spam with fake MX records

Thumbs up Decrease spam with fake MX records

This might be old news and perhaps I'm the only one only finding this out now... or perhaps this is a bad idea for some reason, but I thought I'd share this for those of you who have your own domains.

Came across this by accident while googling MX records (since I don't know too much about DNS, etc.)
    http://blog.whitesites.com/Stop-Spam...14568_blog.htm

I did this two days ago and haven't received one spam message on our domain since. Before our junk mail folder was filled up on a daily basis. In our case I simply created 3 MX records. The first and last ones are fake and the middle one is the correct one.

Its unlikely to make a difference in general. Having a broken mail system is likely to cause as many legitimate mails to get lost as spams.

Firstly - spammers are getting far more clever with their bots. In many cases they put more effort in than the average mail admin to configure their server correctly. The second issue is that a lot of spam is being relayed via legitimate mail servers before getting to you. These servers are setup to retry in exactly the way that is described.

I suspect that this may have been effective against one particular botnet that was poorly coded. Have seen no indication that its a generally effective solution.

I'll give some more feedback in a week, but thus far, for my address I've been 2 days spam-free.
No penis pills, Absa rewards, Sars refunds, Online gaming and whatever we used to receive on a daily basis.

I'll check the other people's mailboxes as well.

Well anything that reduces Spam is of benefit to anyone. I would suspect that using it for a week is not really a long enough test. But I would agree with ambo that the spammers are getting smarter by the day. I wish I could find out what pills they are using so that I can keep up with them. Regards Tim

Got my first spam email in 3 days at 00:30 this morning. Not bad thus far considering that I'm monitoring 5 email accounts and I'm used to receiving at MINIMUM 10 spam emails per day.
3 email accounts are shared company email accounts (everyone has access), then one is my main email account and another is used for when I need to provide an email address online or if I want to register for a newsletter. The latter account is usually the culprit for spam.

I will check at the end of the week with the other people that work with me. They are very limited in terms of IT (meaning they click on pretty much anything and provide their email online when asked).

Your reduction in spammay also be the result of the taking down of a major spam source - BBC reported it as 8% of spam!
You only get one chance to piss off a client. After that they are an ex client ...

Please have a look at the truclean.co.za service. It's a local cloud based anti virus spam filter; you just point your MX to it, it cleans your mail, spools if needs be (and has a GUI to check/modify white lists as well as functionality to manually release your mail) and then sends it back to your mail server.

PM me if you would like to know more.

Try ASSP. And RBL (zen.spamhaus.org and spamcop.org)

If you mess around with MX records, you deserve to have lost mails and irate co-workers.
