Wireless Broadband

Hi,

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to internet and modems etc... I've recently moved into a new apartment which has internet however the current ISP said that I will need a wireless broadband router, does this mean that my ADSL router won't work? Also, what is the difference between ADSL and broadband? Who is the cheapest and most reliable broadband ISP?

AFAIK the current definition of broadband is still any internet speed over 256 kbps

you say the apartment has internet, how is this provided, ADSL?

I assume that your ADSL router is an ADSL modem/ethernet router? You will need a wireless router if you want internet access throughout the apartment.

Who is the current ISP?

If your apartment has wireless connectivity and I have seen some that do then you will not need a router to connect to it. However it will have a security key of some sort to enable you to access it.
If the apartment has connectivity through a telephone jack then you would need to have a router to access it. This would enable you to connect wirelessly in whichever room you want. In setting up the wireless please make sure that you put a security key on it to stop other people acessing your network.
In choosing an ISP you would need to look at how much data you are going to be transferring. It may be better to look at a lower cost package with limited access (capped) at say 3GB rather than going for uncapped or even unshaped connectivity.

Hi Guys,

So i've found out that there are no fixed lines in the building, so no ADSL. The company is Smart Village and they use a Broadband RJ45 network meaning one just has to use a WAN cable From the point in the wall to one's laptop. They are ridiculously expensive so I need to look for an alternative ISP who can support this network. I'll only be needing 1GB per month for surfing, email and browsing.
Any suggestions on ISP's who can meet this requirement? I would consider going uncapped if the ISP is relatively cheap then downloading would enter the equation but thats not essential.
