Default What phone to get for upgrade!

I know this has been asked a lot, but i am upgrading next month and would like any input on what phone to get. My budget is around R500 pm. Am currently using BB 9300, but want to move to another make with better features and faster processing power.

What do you intend to use the phone for? Business, social, media, everything and anything?

There are only two phones to consider . 1. Iphone . 2. Samsung Galaxy S3

I upgraded from a slow n troublesome 9300 to 9790 and I'm content. Can't do without bbm as most of my friends and lots of immediate family are on bb. I suggest you keep the 9300 on pre-paid and upgrade to a S3 as your primary phone.

Depends. If you want to get a Android Phone that gets the updates earlier than the rest. Get a Galaxy Nexus. Want a phone with a Quad Core and takes a while to get updates get a Galaxy S3. Also a good option is HTC One X. I have a Galaxy Nexus and I'm very happy. Dual Core 1.2 Ghz. Battery is a little limiting but drop a bigger capacity batter in an your all set. Iphone is also good but do you really want a Iphone 4S when the 5 is coming out in this year.

P.S You then have Vanilla Jelly Bean whereas Samsung puts their own skin on Android which they call Touchwiz. Worked with it and it is crap. Plus social apps like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and all the other social media can be installed on the phone.

Just make sure you hold an SIII before upgrading to it, as it's quite big. Not everyone wants such a big phone.

Depends on what sort of person you are ... what priorities you have.

Safest option = iPhone (will do what it should do, reliable, well made, quality, good design, small screen, dated OS imo, glass front and back not robust ... cracked screens very common). Wait for new one can be a long wait. Excellent iTunes Store .... gazillion apps, etc. Get US account ( have to lie :-( ). Well developed mature ecosystem (lots and lots of accessories). IMO not an OS as cool and advanced as Android.

Daring option = Android. For those wanting to have a new phone all the time. Very customisable. High specs. Rooting and custom roms a lot of geek fun. Much more interesting option. Apps not at level of Apple in many cases (Apple apps nicer). Lots of variations in offerings. Ecosystem sux (not nearly enough accessories). My order of choices: (1) Samsung Note, (2) HTC One X, (3) Galaxy S3, (4) Nexus. Android = fun and lots of progress (cutting edge stuff).

Thank you so far. All valid points. Some food for thought: SG SII you can get on contract for R499: 300MB PM + 300 SMS PM + 250 MIN PM TALK TIME. SG SIII you can only get on "Business Call" (R369) where basically you get 250 MB PM + 20 MIN TALK TIME. Is the difference so big between the two phones?

I could just as well say a lot of Android apps are nicer than the Apple equivalents. Doesn't prove a thing. As for accessories, what would you like?

Imo no. The screen on the S3 is really fantastic because its a full 720p display unlike the S2 but the S2 still holds its own and still has a great screen.

The S3 has a lot more processing power but you really are not going to be noticing this in day to day use.

Another thing is availability of updates, the S3 is most definitely getting Jellybean however not so certain for the S2 yet.

I got the S2 because the S3 was just a bit out of my price range. A guy I work with recently got the S3 and I held the two side by side and to be honest I'm not disappointed in any way with my decision to get the S2.

One thing to consider, do you want to spend R500pm in total (i.e calls, sms, data) or R500pm just for the contract?
The S2 is still a great phone and with that smart deal you will be covered regarding sms, data and voice. The business contract for the S3 is not really worth it, the call rates are more expensive and you only get 20 mins free time which is ridiculous. You may want to look at financing the S3 via another contract option like Talk 120s. What you could also do is get a Blackberry DataSim paired to your account with another phone, so you still have BBM and the BIS while your main phone carries your voice and sms and data.

You can look at the Samsung S3, S2, Note, Nexus. Don't forget that Nokia also has their Lumia range which contain some good phones. HTC is apparently really nice but I have no experience in this regard. Blackberry doesn't exactly meet the standard of these phones but look at the 9790, 9810 and 9900. Have a look at the Motorola Razr as well. iPhone will be released further down the line but unless you want one, I personally would not wait.

I would suggest a Samsung Galaxy S II, you can still get them for relatively cheap, the SGSIII is great, it's just too big for me to practically lug around.

Else, I do like to party, and so I have lost my fair share of phones. What I did last month was to stick with my old phone and I got a new Galaxy Tab... Now I use my phone to only call and SMS, and the tablet for the rest.
When I go out, I leave the tablet in my car and take my phone with... When I go to the loo, I could probably leave my phone on the bar counter till I get back, and it would still there... and even if it does get stolen, I'll get myself another R300 el-cheapo from Pep stores or something.
