Line ADSL enabled or not?

Hi

I waited over a year before finally getting my phone line yesterday. I was told the project would also cater for ADSL.

I immediately applied for ADSL and phoned 10210 to check for availabillity. I was told that no ports were available and to phone again in a month.

A couple of minutes ago I plugged in my router. The dsl light blinks green rapidly and then stays green. I used the telkom guest account and the Internet connection light turns green. I'm also able to open the telkom website.

Does this mean the lady I spoke to was on medication and I actually have ADSL or can all of the above be possible and my line is still not ADSL capable?

I'll phone again tomorrow, but I just wanted to get some opinions.

Regards
Neale

I'm no expert on this but have you tried logging into your modem/router and viewing the stats ?
Make sure your modem/router's on, then put 192.168.1.1 into a web browser , log on using ''admin'' , ''admin'' (unless you've changed username & pwrd.)

Then, depending on modem/router setup go to something like :
Device info - Statistics - ADSL

You should see:
a.) Attainabe Rate (Kbps)
e.g. 7000 Down ; 928 Up

b.) Rate (Kbps) - indicates actual figures your modem/router's getting
e.g. 384 Down ; 128 Up

I presume if you don't have any figures showing you don't have ADSL, but if figures exist you can see what your line speed is, and what your modem/router can handle.
Other's can correct me if I'm wrong.

It shows down 384 and up 128. I stay 1.2km from the exchange, so I'm sure it can be bumped up. I also get an 41.146.xxx.xxx ip.

Line attenuation 16
SNR 39

Telkom's speed upgrades are due to start in August, if you don't know already - you'll find plenty of threads on the forum in these ADSL Discussions / ISP sections that deal with this.

So, your speed should increase to 1,024 Up without doing anything more, and all you seemingly now need to do is buy some data to test. Also, many threads on this, as well.
Enjoy!

You definitely have ADSL enabled on that port. You won't get the 384/128 numbers if there wasn't. Get a 1GB data package from one of the non-Telkom data provider and then see if you get to other websites. You might be the first South African to get ADSL without being double-billed by Telkom.

Ok, so I phoned telkom a dozen times today in an effort to speak to someone who could explain to me what's going on.

Apparently my line is 4mb DSL enabled/capable. I.e I don't have to wait months for a port to become available (or so I hope). But my line needs to be activated/verified. I can't do a self install.... Something about copper or fibre wiring...

I can see no other explanation why the dsl light comes on (I.e it's synching) and the line not be ADSL enabled. Some Telkom guy said its dial-up, but that sounds like BS. What's the purpose of the dsl sync light if it's always going to be on and why would the router dial up on it's own???! I hate dealing with Telkom.

Is line activation the same as checking for available ports? Or does line activation follow once they've verified port availability? I'm fine with waiting for activation, but I dread having to wait for a port. Waited over a year last time...

What he said. Test with a data account from an SP. Definitely sounds as the line is aDSL enabled. Activation is done online using your telephone number and Telkom order number on this site: http://secureapp.telkom.co.za/ADSLVERIFY_NEW/verifyRequest.do

Do you have an ADSL account to test with? One from Telkom/Mweb etc.. something other than the guest account.

If you don't, drop me a PM. I have an ADSL account which is going to die on Tuesday, that isn't in use.

Ok, It seems Telkom finally agrees with me that I've got a DSL line. Now I have to 'wait for the system to release' my fastest line request and it will be upgraded. Can't see why it's taking so long for the 'system' to release it. The technicians already confirmed it's 4mb capable. This morning they told me that the 'order failed' due to a system fault... Now I've got a new one.

Ahh well, at least after 14months I'm close to getting ADSL again. Another 3-4 day's wait won't kill me (I think).

First off where are you ??
If you are in the new MSANs areas then the line will be ADSL cabable on activation as it does not have to be connected to a DSLAM.
A normal line from a non MSAN/ISAM connection has to be physically connected to a DSLAM in the exchange to have ADSL.

Get a free 1GB account from Afrihost, no strings attached. Use it to test. If your ADSL line can't be self-installed, then you're out of luck.

But you could try anyway. You router is already hooked up, syncing with the exchange, and getting an IP Address from Telkom. Next step is to verify your line. With self-installs, you verify it by going to this link: https://secureapp.telkom.co.za/ADSLVERIFY_NEW/verifyRequest.do. You will need your telephone number and an order number in order to verify. If you don't know your order number, you can phone Telkom them and ask them for it.

If you don't have an order number, then not much else you can do.

My line is working -using Afrihost. But its still only synching at 384. Waiting for telkom to release my 4mb order. Apparently the techs need to go to the exchange and perform some checks first.

Hi there,

Sorry I haven;t picked up this thread before :(

You can send me a PM so I can confirm if your line is synching and at what speed, and when Telkom will be in a position to upgrade you to 4Mb (if available on your exchange)

Hi Afriman

Telkom phoned today and told me they would go to the exchange tommorow to do their checks and do the line speed increase. Ill PM you if it hasn't been sorted out by tommorow.

I'm just glad the first lady I spoke to was wrong when she said no ports available. Wasn't looking forward to waiting another year.

The exchange definitely supports 4mb.

My speed has finally been increased. A telkom techy phoned. It seems that he was also very surprised that my line was ADSL enabled from the start.

Don't know about MSANS, but we've got a blue/green box thats apparently connected with fibre to the exchange. I guess this means descent performance. Can't wait to get home and test!

Great to hear! Glad you got what you needed in the end :)
