The subject of the thread pretty much says it all. What follows is just context.

As someone who has often argued that the only thing atheists have in common is a disbelief in deities, please believe me when I say that I am not trying to make any inferences from this topic.

By it's very nature, the best that could come from this thread is anecdotal evidence. That is all I can expect. So again - not intended to draw inference.

I know it's not a question that would lead to philosophical debate, but PD is still the only place for it.

    So, have you?
Depends on your definition of racist. If you mean racist as in pure hate for a certain race then I don't think I've ever met a real racist ever. Heard of them and seen them on Youtube and the media, but never really met one in person (my grandfather may have been a real racist but not sure).

If you mean racist as in "prefers to mingle with his own kind" then I've met a few - in fact I might be one. Even though I get along with the coloured, black and Indian people at work, I really prefer to hang around my white friends. And I do not like "top deck" couples either. So does that qualify me as racist? (I am religious if it makes your decision any easier).

I am an atheist, and I could really not care less what race you are.

Yes and to be honest, I myself who am a non believer have been called a racist many times (although generally people resort to calling you racist when they cannot argue any further).

None of the ones I know are racist. Then again, I don't know that many racists. I know of a lot, but I do not know them personally. The ones I do know are passionate Christians, though.

    Ok

I don't think the two correlate all that much. Although one could surmise that Atheists who are more prone to believing in evolution would also easily accept that there are differences amongst races and would be able to call them out directly, perhaps even being more susceptible to using it as a form of discrimination forming stereotype groups due to those apparent differences.

Personally I feel by observation I have less respect for certain races mind you there are races I happily accept are in some ways more superior than me too - and I haven't decided if it's by culture or something physical or psychological about certain races that makes them perform better as a group or nation or even as individuals in some aspects. I don't think this opinion has anything to do with my stance on religion though.

    I have.

But not... viciously racist, if you know what I mean?

But I have to admit, as a generalization, the atheists I know are generally the most progressive people I've met, while the rabid, highly unpleasant racists I've known, tend to be Christians.

I have, but in the people I've encountered in my life, there are far more racist theists than atheists. That's not to say that theism breeds racism though...

It doesn't breed racism but the bible does condone slavery but then I'm exactly sure what role race played with regards to slavery in those times.

I know in Mormanism, darker people are impure but as they become more pure they can change to white skin, like Michael Jackson
