Easy way to save data on your phone web browser, tablet and laptop

Hi guys. Came accross this last night and thought it was pretty cool and can save you lots of data via compression with internet browsing. As you know...many web sites have high quality images on them that can chow data very quickly. I sometimes just browse and check some sites erm..nice pics...and after one session of this..can easily use 100 - 200 megs just browsing in one night. This works on android phone and 3G on your laptop.

go to www.fastun.com and register your free account. Once done you can change in your profile settings on the website the kind of compression you want. I have mine on max and it compresses the images to hell...but you can choose one that works for you. Then you do the following:

LAPTOP:
In firefox, you can get a addon for this somehow...though I just changed my proxy server as follows:
server: fastun.com
Port: 7000

It will then ask you for your username and password when you go to your next website ... enter what you regitered with on the website.

compression is now enabled and will save you data. There are limits imposed on the free accounts though. If you dont want compression for certain sites...use another browser like Chrome where you have not loaded the proxy or just delete the proxy settings again.

ANDROID PHONE:

Go into your network settings, go into, then edit your APN settings with the proxy settings as above. Tested it on my web browser on my RAZR and it works.

Anyway...just thought it was pretty cool and could help guys and gals on here save on some data if they want. :-)

I assume this could also help users that have slow connections. If I think of my fiance's mother for example, she gets EDGE on a good day (farm in Bloem). So browsing tends to be a bit sluggish. With compression on, obviously there is less to download and thus quicker page-loads etc.

I am a consumer just like you guys....responsible for my own cell contracts and broadband. I get nothing for free from Vodacom...and thus me interested in things like this :-)

Just out of interest...this is what I have saved so far. Keep in mind that I have mine set on max...so images really are very very much compressed.

That really is impressive, almost half the data.

When you say the images are "very compressed", how of the quality do you sacrifice?

Well...here is a example of what it looks like with settings set to max compression and set to greyscale conversion to save even more. Note that I set the greyscale mode after I took my previous readings of how much it saved...so it should increase even more now.




Pic file size without compression according to yahoo is 83.3KB. After compressed and sent down to my browser by fastun...it is now 4,52 KB (4 625 bytes)

Thing to remember is that my setting is pretty drastic. That is what is nice about this for me...unlike Opera Turbo...you cant change the setting. With this you can.

How secure do you think it is? Browsed through their support section quick but didn't see anything really. I am still thinking for my in-law-to-be, I am just a bit nervous that I suggest she uses it and their bank accounts get hacked or something don't think they will love me very much.

Dunno how secure it is...but that does not bother me all that much. For my internet banking I will use Chromium with no proxy...and for my browsing I will use Firefox with the fastun proxy active. Just to be safe. Besides...the Capitec internet banking site is really minimulistic so that really aint gonna use a lot of data. :-)

Same way I set mine up now - proxy on FF so I can do my surfing there. Chrome has no proxy - will use that for my sites that use logins (I.e. my secured sites - Facebook, banking etc.).

I take that is on your phone or tablet? I also like Opera...but this seems to work better on my laptop. Opera Turbo on my laptop often seems extremely slow and sometimes I have to reload a page a few times. This seems faster en it compresses without changing the layout of the page or making it load in mobile view with some sites.
