I love Google. They always come up with the most impossible projects and they make it possible. I remember way back when they launched Gmail they promised 1Gb free email storage to all, and at the time the normal email storage for free accounts was maybe 50 or 100mb, so 1GB sounded CRAZY. Today I have 10GB available in my Gmail account and so does millions of other people. Google made it look easy. Then when they said they were going to take satellite pictures of the whole earth and you can view any part of the earth on your pc, we thought it was impossible. Worst even was when they started talking about Google Street View... street level photos of every street in America, it sounded like the craziest April fools joke ever.. yet they made it look easy and now it's available in most countries around the world.

So whenever Google does something that sounds too crazy or impossible, I get excited, because that is going to become standard in a few years time. Yes, NOT in South Africa for a long time though, but slowly but surely the tech that they use for these connections will become cheaper with economies of scale and one day (maybe too far in the future) it will be available to us too.

The phone is really a 1940s thing. Why have a landline? It’s sitting there, you use it once every two weeks,” Pichette said.

    Great stuff Google!
Will be following this with a close eye!
The theoretical capacity of a Boeing 747 filled with Blu-ray Discs is 595,520,000 Gigabytes, resulting in a 245,829 Gbit/s flight from New York to Los Angeles.

...while red tape, government policies and Hellkom continue to keep SA on the back foot.

Google certainly is the avant-garde of their field.

This is like the most depressing news ever...

SA will never ever in this lifetime or the next reach that level. Like never ever ever ever ever!

    Imagine having all that gear!!!

    60" LED 3D TV
    1Gbps Internet connection
    TV Box
    Network Box
    Storage Box
    Nexus 7 as Remote

It will destroy the hell out off DSTV's crappy PVR with 80GB of storage!

I guess that what you get for living in the most southern tip of Africa.... -> 4koll ....

I actually felt like crying. Well, hyperbole, but for crying out loud. When are we gonna enter the digital age? I can't wait for the interwebs to come to south africa - that'll be an exciting day indeed!
