    Thumbs up

I love the way google thinks.
i agree with the post about how they make those impossible projects possible. Perhaps they should be challanged with the most impossible project of them all... IMPLEMENTING there infrastructure in South Africa.

Is there some way we can show great demand for it and present it to them?
Seriously, what if we all agree to it by an upfront investment of R1000 across SA to show google there is a genuine interest here.

    huge sigh!
    let at least try

Even Google has no chance against the ANC! They in a league of their own when it comes to progression....

Google would never do it considering our "Web immaturity". most of america is connected already. the amount of south africans connected tops out at about 4 million, in comparison to our 40+ million citizens.

It wouldnt be profitable for them to build an infrastructure for this. not to mention all the DoC/ICASA/Telkom regulations they would have to fight inevitably.

there is just no profit to be made here. sorry to disappoint all you guys. its the same reason we don't have the iTunes music/movie/tv show store here.

interesting to see that we were one of the first countries to offer internet connectivity for the consumer in africa, yet we are beat by countries such as kenya who got their access later.

the difference between Google and microsoft is that microsoft competes by stifling the competition, Google competes by improving their products.

But why Kansas City of all places? Google's Head Office is near San Francisco ... I would've thought it'd been around there for a single city test.

Also, we haven't even got Google Checkout here because of our countries archaic forex laws, and google hasn't successfully dealt with that (hell, even paypal hasn't dealt with it properly, they just found a loophole via FNB), not to mention this has only been launched in 1 US City ... so I think it'll be a GOOD WHILE before it reaches here.

Don't you just wish a tornado would sweep up Kansas City and bring it here! (And yes, I know in my reference, it is supposed to be sweeped to Kansas state ... but WGAS)
Will be a CA by year end ... Anyone with any business opportunities

Likely because KC gave them the least hassles and co-operated with Google for a great service for the people of the city.
Just like Google's been trialing NFC in Portland, Oregon.
Just like the Driverless Car is being tested in Arizona, I believe - or is it Nevada/Texas. I forget.

But Google don't go into these projects willy nilly. Every project and city is chosen with care.

probably less competition as well, so they can get their foot in the door and start building up a good user base

I didn't think it would be possible...but now DSTV seems like more of a rip-off than it did before.

I wonder how much it would cost to get something comparable in SA. I'm guessing like 20k a month?

bits. Nobody advertises connections speeds in bytes....though personally I find it more intuitive. i.e. 40KB/s tells me more than 384kbps (ignoring overheads).

Yes...we did get that local GGC...but aside from that what do they actually *do* in SA?
