Thanks. Thus far we've had her locked in the bathroom with a child's safety gate but she's figured out how to climb that so we'll have to think of a new approach. Now that I think of it we may just have an old play pen lying around. . .
Thanks - I'll have a look.
Bone meal - fresh from the spar - good for pups?

We crate trained our Jack Russel.
We used a box similar to this:
She sleeps in our bed, but she uses the decrepit old crate for everything else, eating in and during the day (and to hide from the bigger dogs). I only ever closed her inside the box in her first year and then only a few times. Now she will go to her box and stay there until I call her again.
I tried to throw the crate away since its broken and basically junk now since its 10 years old. I bought her a new one and put it where her crate sits and put the old one on top of the dustbin.
I cam out an hour or so later to find her sitting ontop of the two halves of her box ontop of the dustbin. I took her off and she jumped right back on. That evening she refused to come inside.
The message was clear and we still have the decrepit old box.

I'm looking at getting 2 german Shepherds and using vari kennels for crate training. Crate training is recommended in most good training books.
The crate = dog cave.
They love it, it becomes "their" place.

I did crate training with my German Shepherd, was the easiest house training I ever did with a dog.
It's not cruel. If you think it's cruel you don't know much about dog psychology or dog training.
This is the best way to house train a pup.
You do of course have to learn how to do it properly, like you can't leave the pup in there too long, the duration depends on its age.
This technique taps into the dogs instinct of not crapping where it sleeps.
Soon the crate will be a safe haven and a nice home for the pup.
There is of course lots of learning and do's and don'ts of which I'm sure you take the time and read up about.
This method is as far as I know not imperative but it is the quickest way to house train a puppy.
I never did it for my 2 but that's because when I was looking for crates I couldn't find one at a reasonable price.
