I wouldn't worry about when they start talking. It's mostly a motor development thing. Can't remember the age ours started saying proper words, but he could understand fairly complex sentences long before and he did try to say words, but his muscle control wasn't there yet.

Does baby talk mean nonsense words or using a higher pitched sing-song voice? The latter is usually considered good as they appear to have an easier time decoding it. But nothing wrong with occasionally using silly words. Can lead to much laughter.

My daughter goes to an all black school. She started talking at a very young age (about 10 months) but I did not understand half of what she was saying, simply because I can't speak the languages she was talking.

My little one is almost 8 months, he randomly says Dada, sometimes all he repeats is dadadada, then some in gibberish and starts laughing his head off.

This man's baby age is 796 months, normal age 66 years old. He has never learned to speak properly and many would consider him a success.

My daughter started talking at 12 months, her first word was George (she loved Curious George). She has always spoken well and while it may sound like a cliche she was singing before she could talk.
My son started talking at about 15 months. his first words where mamo (have no idea why that instead of mama, he still calls her that every now and then) and daddy. Tho he was making sounds from about 13 months, like cars driving and so on.

I believe its more of actually copying what the baby is saying, and using the same tone, but i think moderation as always is key...

Generally those first sounds, although some seem like they might be words, are just meaningless sounds.

My youngest is 17months and refuses to talk, she understands everything but doesn't say much that makes sense anyway

I think she is quite happy for her sister to do all the talking for her

Had a 2 year old cousin who would not say a peep. The parents were getting nervous, afraid something was wrong. Then about two months after he turned 2 he just woke up one morning and starting talking without any problems. From what I've read some kids won't speak until they feel they really need to. If the parents are good at reading their kid's wants and needs then the kid does not feel the need to talk because they already feel they have good communication with their caregiver.

A funny note...Our 5 month old has said "nyaya" for bottle since he was a few weeks old, the other night he said "k*k nyaya"....perhaps he was trying to tell us "hey, this is food is k*k!"

We used some basic signs. Drastically reduced frustration when he was trying to say what he wanted, but his mouth wasn't co-operating.
