Just Installed Ubuntu 12 First Time Linux User
I bought desktop pc with the following specs
I3 processor
4 ggb ram
with following motherboard

My problem is with the HDMI output, it's not working. (I will be mainly using this pc to 1: play media files avi and mkv and 2: to torrent & 3: To surf) What steps should I follow to get the HDMI working. I am using a samsung 32 inch sq01 as my tv/monitor.

do you have NVIDIA card?
Have you done an update straight after installation?
Also have you checked Settings Displays to see if monitor is picked up and active?
welcome to an endless list of problems with ubuntu/linux. Its the most newbie unfriendly OS i have ever come across.
Have you installed the official drivers or using the standard Ubuntu drivers? It appears your motherboard has an Intel gpu. Never used one of those on Ubuntu, sorry.
Motherboard website says as much:

I only use Nvidia HDMI and it works perfectly. It must be a driver issue. Try searching for your chipset driver and Ubuntu solutions:

Sorry for the late reply had to re-install ubuntu after update as I got a no root error message. I have updated everything per the update manager. Yes the VGA is working.

Are you trying to connect a normal monitor or a TV to the PC?
I cannot find an instance where someone could not get HDMI to work on Intel, it should just be plug and play.

I have a Intel Icedale motherboard with onboard HDMI for my HTPC, and it worked with Ubuntu 12.04 out of the box, though it is XBMCBuntu its still using Ubuntu 12.04 packages/repos.
Pretty certain I didn't have to do anything special, it just works out of the box.
Unless you have both DVI and HDMI connected, then things get funky.

Installed ubuntu 12 for my aunt on a netbook, she has only used windows and does not like change very much... converted her in a week. Her desktop is also now running ubuntu, I only install LTS tnough.
