Trouble with internet: Browser connects, other apps don't

I started using a Blackberry the day before yesterday. It's my brother's old one that's been sitting in a cupboard for a while, and I don't have BIS or anything, I'm just using my normal Vodacom Top-Up SIM.

Everything was working fine internet-wise, until this afternoon Whatsapp and Opera Mini no longer connect, but I can still get online with the built-in 'Browser'. I didn't change anything in between working and not-working, I just went for a hike (the phone came along).

My APN is set to 'internet' and I've checked the permissions: both Whatsapp and Opera Mini have 'Internet' set to 'Allow'.

Any ideas as to what's going on? Thanks!

Seems like I jumped the gun... Something more googling told me it was something to do with service books and and removing the battery for a minute sorted it out.

A lot of things will not work without BIS. I also recently gave my old BB away and tried to just use a normal data bundle but I gave up and just bought a BIS bundle.

Well it's happened again, and again been fixed my a hard reset... But I can't go around hard resetting my phone twice a day!

What's up? I really don't understand Blackberries...
