Thread: User can only connect on EDGE, and not HSPA

Default User can only connect on EDGE, and not HSPA

    Hi All

On a laptop, the user can only connect on Vodacom 3G at EDGE speeds. We have set the preferred speeds to 3G but no matter where the laptop goes, its only on EDGE.

Move the SIM to a Galaxy Tab and it connects on HSPA. We have also tried the SIM on anther PC and it connects 100% to HSPA

Could the software be corrupted? Is there any fix for this?

    Thanks

What modem (manufacturer and model) are you using on the Laptop?

    Yes.

I have this issue at work every week almost.

Uninstall the Vodafone Software, Reboot, Reinstall. Always use Modem in SAME USB port. Windows installs the driver again and becomes "confused" if you will as to where the modem is located.

Edit: Remember to remove the modem if you uninstall and only insert it when you reinstall.

    Hi there Rollerball,
I agree with gings that it is unlikely that the software is corrupt. Teraside has a good suggestion. I have noticed when connecting USB devices that on some ports it is slower than on others. I now try and connect the devices to the prot they were originally connected to. Hopefully it will help resolve the problem and I look forward to reading about if it does or not on this forum.

    Good luck

If the Galaxy Tab and another PC are in better reception areas, it might just be a case of crappy signal where the laptop is located.

If the software was corrupt, I would think that EDGE wouldnt function as well.

    Hi All
    Thanks for the assists.

Doing the uninstall and re install didn't work.
Model of the modem is a K4605

Strange thing is that when it does find a 3G signal is sends packages but doesnt recieve any. Dead in the water.
    the Edge connection works fine.

Try to reset the Windows 7 Networking and reboot afterwards:

I would also suggest a malware scan with Malwarebytes to make sure no nasties are on the system.

Just to verify, did you test the modem on another laptop or computer? The device itself might be faulty. I understand you tested the sim card elsewhere.

User tells me they even replaced the modem with a new one. Same issue.

Don't go on his/her word. Users are like that. They love to talk nonsense. Test it on another computer and deduct whether it's faulty or not.

    +1.
Slower on some ports - not related to Rolerball issue:
    1. It could be that your motherboard has two different USB controller chips and drivers problem on one controller.
    2. Some not critical power problems. Modem detects voltage drop and reduce transmit power to avoid hanging/reset. Avoid front USB ports on desktop. On laptop chose port close to the power charger connector.
