Not getting higher than 4.5Mbs on 8ta with Hauwei 683 3G modem/wireless router

I recently purchased the Hauwei 683 with an 8ta 60+60GB package for use in the Strand (Western cape) area where signal appears to be good (I'm on the 10th floor and get full, 5 bars, 3G signal on my Blackberry). I was told that I could get up to 21Mbs download speeds but am averaging about 2.5Mbs and nothing higher than 4.5? I was expecting at least 7.1Mbs. Am I expecting too much?

Yes, "up to" is famous sales technique. If you were the only user on that tower, then yes, 21mbps easy-peasy (depending on the tower's own backhaul, but lets assume it's a full tower with a lot of bandwidth available)

So no, the world DOES NOT revolve around you, there are others using the same tower, a tower that has to carry voice and data reliably without degrading either service and only has a fixed amount of bandwidth available to do that in.

Depends on location, location, location, and towers, I have B683, and I get 8-12MB/s depending on time of day, 8ta 2+1 go big bundle.

2.5Mbps - 4Mbps is not bad in my opinion for wireless 3G internet from 8ta. I do not get higher than 1mbps from Vodacom where I live, on HSPA.
