Thread: One dongle to fit all (3G networks)

Default One dongle to fit all (3G networks)

Reading the forum I see there are options to use Vodafone dangles with cell c sims but is that all the freedom we get? Surely there is a 3G dongle out there that can use all 3 major networks (Vodacom, mtn + cell c)?

I know cell c is on 900umts but there must be a "one dongle fits all" solution out there. I'm hoping the broadband market gets more competitive in the future so I'm just trying keep my options open. I flat out refuse to buy into a contract. I'm tired of getting raped buy these companies! I believe we as consumers should have more power to go where the price is best.

Vodafone modems have written on the box supported frequencies in 2G and 3G mode. If doubt, post question on the forum. If you have modem covering both 900MHz and 2100MHz, it will work on all networks.

You can even get the same model modem as the providers give you, but unbranded.

    E.g: http://www.comx-computers.co.za/E173...ap-p-52492.php

I got a similar one at a client when we needed (budget) 3g failover, tried Cell C, Voda and MTN SIMs in it...was curious

Unbranded modems usually just don't have the connection settings pre-configured, so you need the APN/username/pass to get it going.

Get HSPA+ modem if possible. Examples E367 from 8ta, or E353, E352 at lower price (MTN at Edgars). All branded modems support South African frequencies, these are U2 versions (two band UMTS 900/2100MHz) and have connector for external antenna. You might find later you need it.
E173 is very old design, not worth its price.

@sajunky - Thanks for the help. Looks like the E367 is the best bet. Must be able to get onto the cell c network as well as mtn(8ta). I actually couldn't care about vc right now.
    Much appreciated :-)
