They're not terrible and lately some of them are really, really nice quality-wise. Those are generally the ones with in-house movements and can be found at the upper end of the pricing scale. Their average watch is effectively a Seiko with a label and won't come with things like sapphire glass or a special (In any sense of the word) movement. There are far better buys for the same money, unless you go to the top end, at which point there are still better buys, but not necessarily better value.

Perhaps the EA watch has a Seiko motor it's only a R2000 watch but surely Tag has a Tag movement and internals?

Nope, only the topend Tags. Tag and Seiko are in a partnership and have been for a few years now where Seiko supplies the movements. They took massive flack for it from the watch community. That's why you'll be hard-pushed to find watch experts who have only good things to say about Tag.

Officially and at that level, yeah, but they've been using Seiko movements since the 80's to some extent. In the 90's and 2000's they started making much larger use of simple ETA movements or modified versions thereof. The Seiko 5 is the mule of automatic watches and they can be had for a chunk under $100, to give you an idea on pricing, and that's for an automatic.
