Thread: Killing my neighbor's willow tree ...

Default Killing my neighbor's willow tree ...

I've been hesitant to post this for a while but based on the other killing a tree thread I decided to go head and what you all think.

One of my neighbors has a willow tree in the corner of his garden. It's the house behind my house. The tree is about 50cm from our shared wall and is about 6 meters tall. I'd say it's medium size.

My problem is that nothing will grow on my side of the wall for about 3 square meters closest to the willow. The tree is in a part of the neighbors garden that is never used. It's behind is garages in a corner that can't be used for anything except a tree really. He never cleans that area either so when the leaves drop in autumn they just lie there for months until the elements get rid of them.

So I want to kill it.

I have not spoken to him about it. In true suburban spirit we don't ever speak except the odd nod when we see each other over the wall.

    Idea's how?

Cut off the roots as deep as you can go on your side. It will take several months. When you have a nice hole, pour pool salt into it before back filling

    Maybe speak to him.

Tell him you are concerned about the tree so close to the wall....

Maybe he will then remove it himself
You do not have to be his friend, just be polite.

Offer to pay the thousands it costs to get it cut down and maybe he will agree to it. Or at least allow you to trim it.

You are well within your rights to cut any branches that are overhanging into your property.

Branches are ok. it's the willow roots that suck up all the water and leave a dust bowl in that part of the garden that are my issue.

    Salt in the roots? Really?

Only outside of demarcated zones. So best find out from your local municipality whether the above area is such.

commercial use only I doubt his neighbor is growing it for commercial use so therefore it is meant to be cut down. Convincing your neighbor will be the problem, but hey worth a shot.

    Why don't you asphyxiate it?

Both hands around the trunk & squeeze, silent and effective.
