I'm not surprised at all. I am so frustrated with my 3G which "supposedly" is able to give me between 7 and 21 Mb/s according to the vodacom marketing, but even when I am in Midrand less that 1km radius from Vodaworld, the center of the Vodacom universe, I am still often connected on Edge... 3G is nowhere to be found. I have seen this with both my android phone and my ipad, which both run different sims and different software, but same result. And it's not only Vodacom that has these problems... my wife is on MTN and that often seems even worse! She doesn't even have a data connection half the time.

I think the mobile operators should rather be spending more money on giving consistent data connections on their network, rather than blowing billions on expensive advertising.

I did not believe the 1,00000000000000000000000000000000000 articles prior to this one that stated how bad SA's Internet is, but maybe this one will change my mind.

Another article about high cost and/or low performance. So typical South Africa! Nothing is going to happen about this too!

RPM, I have to disagree with this article. How is Akamai obtaining this data? Is it limited to HSDPA networks, or does this include R99 (standard 3G) data?

I have access to one of the largest databases of network stats in the world, and this result is not at all correct.

My mobile internet has been really slow of late, and that includes Vodacom, Cell C and 8ta.

The one is worse than the other, and this is in the middle of Joburg.

I have zero MTN reception, so cannot even comment on them !

Although you may be right, peoples' experiences are what count in the end. Most people will see the stats given and accept it, because it conveys what they experience on a daily basis.

I've done numerous SpeedTests from my phone (iPhone 4S) and I've been shocked every time. I rarely get anything over 1 Mbps down - it even drops to sub 0.300 Mbps speeds! Upload speeds are even worse, mostly below 0.4 Mbps and often below 0.1 Mbps. This is absolutely terrible! Friends and colleagues all agree on this.

Our cellular networks used to boast about how advanced our networks are and how they outperform even developed countries. Hmmmm. Yes, there are instances where expected speeds are experienced, but usually these are few and far between...
