If someone walks into a pre-school and kills 20 children with a tanto knife or katana -- do we ban all knives and swords?
You forget and ignore history....Yeah the local hicks with their handguns and shotguns stand a great chance against a M1A1 and an A10. That clause meant something once, but is redundant now.

The biggest killer of innocent civilians throughout the history of mankind are... their own governments, not enemy troops and not foreign governments. Their own leaders -- look it up, it's called democide.
The statistics are staggering.
No one cares for, and loves for, your family and your life more than you do. No one is going to protect them but yourself if someone invades your house, invades your country, breaks the law, or attempts to override the rule of law.
It has been that way since the beginning of time, it remains that way today.
