Can somebody help me out with what Telkoms new speeds are and what the specs are ie. SNR etc. All that sort of staff that I feel we should know as the call-centre and tech says that you are running within their ranges.

I feel that far too often they pull the wool over our eyes just so that they do not have to do the repair properly.

SNR

SNR means Signal to Noise Ratio. You need high SNR for a stable connection. In general, a higher signal to noise ratio will result in less errors.

* 6bB. or below = Bad and will experience no line synchronisation and frequent disconnections
* 7dB-10dB. = Fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions.
* 11dB-20dB. = Good with little or no disconnection problems
* 20dB-28dB. = Excellent
* 29dB. or above = Outstanding

Line Attenuation

In gerneral, attenuation is the loss of signal over distance.

* 20bB. and below = Outstanding
* 20dB-30dB. = Excellent
* 30dB-40dB. = Very Good
* 40dB-50dB. = Good
* 50dB-60dB. = Poor and may experience connectivity issues
* 60dB. and above = Bad and will experience connectivity issues

I understand what everybody is saying, but what I would like to know is what the minumum speed levels are for each package. There have been instances where my SNR has dropped to below 6dB and all Telkom want to do is synch the line at a slower speed instead of logging a fault. Surely there should be minumum speeds for each package. I used to have a line that had an average SNR of 15dB and a line attenuation of about 25dB on a 4 Meg line and slowly it has got worse. Now I have a SNR of only 7dB and line att of 40dB still on a 4 Meg line. Surely there should be some standards where I can tell these fools that the line needs to be fixed instead of taking the easy route and just downgrading.

It is not quite that simple first off the telephone reticulation is designed for analogue voice and now data is being pushed over cables that were not designed for that .
The more data circuits you push over these cables the more interference you will get.
So in conclusion unless they can test a physical fault on the line not much can be done.
They have started using cable that is designed for data but that will take for ever to replace all the underground and above ground cables.
