Default (Re)touching Lives Through Photos and Using Photoshop for Good

    From PetaPixel:

Photoshopping gets a lot of bad press due to the fact that it’s often used to “make skinny models skinner and perfect skin more perfect”, but there are also people out there using it for good. The video above is a recent TED talk given by retoucher Becci Mason on how Photoshopping was used to bring joy and memories back to those affected by the devastating 2011 tsunami in Japan.

After the disaster, Mason traveled to the country with the organization All Hands in order to provide relief. While there, she discovered that lost photos, albums, cameras, and memory cards made up a huge part of the heartbreak experienced by the victims.

Of the photos that were recovered, nearly all of them were damaged after being soaked in salt water, sewage, and oil.

Deciding that the photos should be restored before returning them to their owners, Mason turned to social media to seek volunteers. Within 2 weeks after putting out a call for help, she found herself with 150 volunteers willing to offer their time and services. Half a year later, the Photo Rescue volunteer count had ballooned to 1,100.

In the end, Mason’s efforts led to over 135,000 photographs being cleaned, and hundreds were retouched and returned to their owners.

Here are some before-and-after samples showing photos restored by the project:

    Great project with great results

Can the same not be achieved with free software?

Of course. Volunteers for similar projects also use paintshop pro, gimp, even paint.net. I'm not sure if PSP is free but GIMP sure is.

I thought he was referring to software that fixes everything with the click of a button...
But yeah, you're right, it can be achieved with free software & lots of work...

This is one of my favourite things to do in my free time. I love retouching old damaged photos for friends, their amazement at the finished product is more than enough payment for me.

So in photoshop it's a one-click fix? Got a link?

No... also requires hard work, although some plug-ins would like to convince you otherwise

If you can make a plugin for photoshop then you can make one for gimp etc.

My gripe is basically that the topic sounds like free advertising for photoshop while you could achieve the same result with other apps

I have to disagree with you on this. While other software may have the same functionality as Photoshop, they are certainly not nearly as versatile as Photoshop.

I have been using Photoshop for approximately 11 years and there is no free software that comes close to it. I use Gimp on a daily basis and it's just not a polished as Photoshop.

I could probably retouch a photo that's badly damaged with Gimp, but it would take much longer and I wouldn't get the same results as with Photoshop.

On the other side, I have to admit that Gimp do have some features or way things are done that's better than Photoshop, so I do have to give it credit for that.

You sound like some photographers who say you can't take decent pics unless you use the most expensive lens in a particular class. I've been doing restorations with Paintshop Pro since v6, and I'll bet you I can get to the same end product as you in the same amount of time...
