User CP, General Settings and then under Thread display options there's a tick box "Show Avatars"

Ah, ok. I see.
In that case they should introduce more picture types to add to the confusion as two is too subtle. Maybe that can add "Character" and also "User Image" or perhaps "Member Icon". I think then, with five image representations for the same logon, they will achieve the desired effect.
