Thread: Car Insurance

  1. #1

    Default Car Insurance

There must be an old thread on this somewhere, but I decided to open up a new one.

I am looking to buy a car at the end of the year (eyeing the Jetta 1.4 TSI - secondhand +-30 000kms). I was wondering what kind of insurance premium to expect?

Here is my profile: 27 year old male, lives in a security complex, have not claimed in 3 years, cost of vehicle +-R215K.

Currently driving an old Polo, so my premiums are quite low R350p/m. Just want to prepare myself for the shock! Don't want to get a quote as the insurance companies would be hounding me for days on end!

    Should be under a grand.

Hippo has a range from R1100 - R2200. Could I get under a grand going through a broker?

Don't use hippo. It's a con. All those quotes come from companies in the same group.

any Hippo/Outsurance/etc. is gonna be a rip off. Have a look at Risk Benefit Solutions (www.rbs.co.za). They are brokers with a slight bias towards hollard products, but I have had only good experiences with them in about 5 years. Their rates are reasonable and they handle claims quite efficiently as well.

Depending on the car's risk profile in term of hijacking (only major differentiating factor), I think you should be able to get a rate of around R600 a month from them. That is approx what I pay for an '09 Cooper S, and I am 25.

    Outsurance are the best IMO.

    Factors that will affect risk:-
    Security Immobilizer/Tracking system
Repair costs of that specific vehicle
What is the vehicle used for
    Regular drivers other than yourself
    Garaged or not

Bud get a broker to source the best rates otherwise you get sucked into something you might regret or not be able to depend on when needed.

OT but still useful info. Call your insurance company every year and ask them to reevaluate your payment. They will never tell you that the price goes down and keep charging you at the same or higher rate until you ask them to check the costs again. Twice in the last two years Outsurance lowered my monthly installments by around R100 after I called them and asked to reevaluate it.

Well I've been working with Hippo for the last few months now, so can tell you this is incorrect.

Their partners change all the time. No real preference.

Hippo worked for me. Just put in all my info, took screenshot of the price and forwarded the screenshot on when asking for a quote.

I pay R630 per month for a sports car worth about R170k. Male, 28 year old. The main thing though is that I am driving accident free for over 7 years. If I was accident free for only 4 years then my premium would increase by about R200.
