Thread: Wi-fi and Telkom Closer ADSL modem/router

  1. #1

Default Wi-fi and Telkom Closer ADSL modem/router

Is it possible to use the wireless connection to the internet if router/modem is configured in bridge-mode and the dialup is made from PC ?.
It works though if the ISP login details is configured in the modem. Searched here for a possible answer but to no avail. Any advice will be appreciated

    Greetings

It will be somewhat tricky, I suspect, because the default gateway on your network will be the PC that is establishing the PPPoE connection, and probably that PC will also need to issue DHCP leases.

One way to check might be to configure static addresses on your PC, and your wireless device, and check if you can ping each other. If you can, you can add a default route on the wireless device pointing to the PC, and see if you can reach the internet. You may have to enable connection sharing of some sort on the PC, though, to activate packet forwarding and address translation.

Yes, it is possible, but why would you want to do that?

By using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) in Windows XP/7, your PC will do all the things that RoganDawes said:
    1) It will act as a gateway and allow other PC's to use that PC's Internet connection
    2) It will start a DHCP server on 192.168.137.1 (for Win7) and on 192.168.1.1 (for WinXP)

To setup ICS, you have to create a PPPoE connection if you don't have one already.
Then go to the PPPoE connections' properties and then into the Sharing tab. Then enable sharing and then it would change your PC's LAN IP address to like 192.168.137.1 and it would also enable its DHCP server.

I would actually suggest that you disable the DHCP server on the ADSL modem before you enable ICS, because once you've enabled ICS you might not be able to access your ADSL modem's web interface again - until you manually set your IP address back to the same IP range that the modem is in.

    Thanks guys for the replies.
Slightly lost but have a question.
If you enable ICS on the PPPoE coonection there is a settings button at the bottom [Windows XP] which list a whole lot of services which can be selected. Do I need to select anything there ?

Do not select any services. Those services are for when you want to allow people on the Internet to connect to one of those services that you're hosting.

Just bare in mind that when you use Windows XP for ICS, that it might host a DHCP server in the same IP range as the ADSL modem, because it would set its LAN IP address to 192.168.1.1 - which is a common ADSL modem LAN IP address.

If you want ICS, but without the DHCP server, then enable ICS and just change your "server" PC's LAN IP address away from 192.168.1.1 - to like 192.168.2.1
If you do that, then you'll need to configure the devices (PC's/laptops/phones) that you want to connect via the PC, so that their IP addresses are in the same subnet/range as the "server" PC's LAN IP. The other important things to do are to set their Default Gateway & Primary DNS server IP addresses to that of the "server" PC's LAN IP address.
eg. if you set the "server" PC's LAN 192.168.2.1, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, then you should set the other devices' IP addresses to anything in the 192.168.2.2 - 192.168.2.254 range. Keep their subnet mask on 255.255.255.0 too. You'll also need to set their Gateway & DNS to 192.168.2.1

    Pada,
That is a great explananation of how to set up for ICS. I am sure many will refer to it in the future when they want to do it.
RSS is there any particular reason why you would not want the PC's to connect directly to the router?

Thanks pada for the explanation. Will give it a shot over the weekend. Wish me luck

    @Tim
Have to run the router/modem in bridge mode because of the need to make a dialup connection to a server at work from home.

    RSS:
    What dialup connection is that?

If it is a PPTP VPN connection (which is what I use to VPN to my office from home), then it will connect over the PPPoE connection dialed by the router, which means that you don't need to setup your modem in bridge mode at all!

    Hi pada

Got the ICS to work .. Thanks.
Only problem is that now I cannot login to router. I did disable, as you suggested, the DHCP in the LAN Config of router before saving the settings.

    Current :
    Windows IP Configuration
    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

    PPP adapter TKSA:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 41.146.63.163
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 41.146.63.163

Your question about dialup connection - I have no idea .. was given the login details and created the PPPoE on home PC. Once connected - then use Windows Remote Desktop. I know it is archaic, but that is how we get by. Must find out if company has VPN access of some sorts.

If you want to be able to log in on your ADSL modem whilst your running ICS, you'll need to change your ADSL modem's LAN IP address so that it is in the same IP address range as your ICS LAN connection: 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254.

So you'll now need to set one of your machines' IP addresses to the same range as your ADSL modem is currently in, log in on the ADSL modem and change its IP address.

Thanks for your time, much appreciated.

Currently your PC's IP address is 192.168.0.1, and your modem's IP address is probably 192.168.1.1, which is out of your PC's subnet.
You'll have to change your PC's IP address to 192.168.1.2 to be able to access your modem at http://192.168.1.1/ again. Once you have access to the ADSL modem, change the modem's IP address to the 192.168.0.x range and then change your PC's IP address back to 192.168.0.1 again.

Once you've done that, you should be able to have ICS, as well as access to your ADSL modem.

Thanks again Pada for all the advice. By hook or by crook got it right but slighly different. Will explain in short :
Hard reset router. Deleted the "quick start" config. Create new one but in bridge mode. Switched off DHCP and made the static IP 192.168.0.2 in the LAN Config. Saved settings. Then switched on ICS for the PPPoE on PC. Now able to acces router with 192.168.0.2 instead of 10.0.0.2.
