Be very wary when shopping at Makro.

Finally decided to stop shopping at Makro because they consistently overcharge on their advertised pricing. I used to do most of my grocery shopping at Makro but after the last three incidents I refuse to take the risk or deal with the frustration again:

- 3 Trips ago I was charged over R700 for a R60 item. I noticed it by chance as it was the last item scanned. Tellers comment was that they only sold the items in trays of 12. When they were proved wrong they apologised and refunded me.
- 2 trips ago was charged significantly more than the price of a kettle at the till. Complained and was refunded. Thankfully I'd already decided to reduce purchases to less that 10 items and watch the scanned price like a hawk.
- Today, 5 items in trolley, and overcharged on pampers that are on special. Complained, was told I had the wrong item and when again I was proved correct they apologised and refunded me.

Pricing at the till is one of the most basic things to get right as a wholesaler/retailer and clearly Makro can't do this. I would hate to think how many times this has gone unnoticed by me in the past. No matter what perceived saving there is to buying in bulk from Makro, just one mistake like that and all your savings go down the tube. I would strongly recommend that you pay very special attention to the scanned price at the till especially if you shop at Makro Strubens Valley.

i also keep strong watch on scanning be it at woolies , spar , or just some general store...

caught the lady out at a general store trying to sell me some popeye shirbit for R3 where on the box it has R1.20

... im 25 almost ... those popeye shirbits i havent seen since i was 11 or something XD but the story you are telling me has happened to me before in spar, plenty of times !

anyway some people just accept it when an item gets double scanned because they don't worry about money, they never check slips and just carry on with life.... they just think prices have gone up !

Happened with me at CNA buying some photo print paper. The massive difference in price alerted me!

Happens all over the place... not just Makro.

Its not a reason to stop shopping at Makro, you just need to be vigilant.

Trade Centre was the same. We used to do out shopping there and without fail we would be overcharged on a few items and we would have to call the floor manager to rectify the mistake. When this started happenening every weekend I emailed the manager of Trade Centre and was invited for coffee and a chat. Needles to say the overcharging continued and we left them to go shop elsewhere.

The excuse every time is that the pricing inside was not set on the tills and that's why there are errors but if you don't pick this up you pay the higher price and I have seen people being charged the higher "special" price because they do not look.

Now what of those people who DON'T watch the tills, they are the ones caught out every time. What Trade Centre would do is advertise a special at the end of the aisles so when coming in the door you see the specials and you grab BUT the cheaper items were actually in the aisles but the customers does not see it unless they walk pass the special paper and actually go look around inside.

I think the best thing to do is to start calculating when you pick up an item.
Lets say eggs are R8.67 you round off to R10 (too make it easy to calculate), so that by the time you get to the till you know the maximum amount you are going to pay.
Then if the till amount is higher, you can point it out.

Mofos tried to charge me for 20 glasses when there were 8.

I do believe this specific incident was deliberate.

How often do we check our receipts? Not very often especially if the receipt is long, I think they are aware of this.

You must go in with a list and the price in mind and look around and most importantly, watch the till. You can bet there were plenty people robbed at the till point because they just grab an item without looking at the price and they don't watch the till and the shop scores.

My wife makes sure all her items are priced together so when going through the till slip the prices are easy to find instead of looking up and down the slip for the items and the prices.

People don't check their slips? I check while the lady is still scanning so if I notice anything suspicious I say "now hold up just one damn minute, gurrrrl"
