Thread: Regulations wrt pedestrian crossings.

  1. #1

    Default Regulations wrt pedestrian crossings.

Can someone perhaps point me in the correct direction about where I can find the regulation regarding pedestrian crossings? I specifically would like to know what the rules is for both pedestrians and motorists where there are these diagonal zigzag lines on the shoulder of the road before the zebra lines over the road. My interpretation is that when a pedestrian approaches the crossing, and there already is a vehicle inside these zigzag lines, the pedestrian have to wait for the vehicle. However, when a pedestrian already is at the zebra crossing, and the vehicle is still outside of these lines, the pedestrian has the right of way and the vehicle should then stop.

I no doubt will get a lot of personal opinions how they think it should be, but I would like to have the correct regulation which I can refer to. I did scan through the road traffic act, but cannot find any information specifically on these types of crossings. I need this for a safety presentation I need to make in about two weeks time.

    Thanks in advance!

Not sure about your zig-zag lines, but there should be a yield sign, and dashed line across the lane before the zebra crossing. Then what you said holds. If car is over dashed line, car has right of way, if car is behind dashed line, pedestrian has right of way.

Some times I feel that pedestrian crossings are put in inappropriate places. I generally respect them, as I made regular use of them living in Stellenbosch. But there are certain places where it's dual lane in both directions, on a long road where people are doing 60+ and one doesn't always notice pedestrians waiting to cross the road.

    EDIT---

^ That what you're referring to?

    It's not that hard.

Pedestrian crossing: if the car is able to stop safely, the pedestrian has right of way. Otherwise the car has right of way. Obviously no use the pedestrian suddenly jumping in front of a car.

Zig-zags... the car isn't allowed to stop within that area if there isn't a pedestrian busy crossing.

Yes, that is exactly what I am referring to.
It seems almost impossible to get hold off the actual regulations governing this! I have googled to no avail, and everybody's opinion differs.

Pedestrians have right of way, except on highways.

    100 % correct.
If car outside zig-zag zone then pedestrians have right of way.
If car inside zig-zag zone then pedestrians must wait.

not really, most resources indicate that the zig-zag simply means you're not allowed to stop there as froot mentioned. It has no direct correlation to who has right of way.

    +1

It is safer for a driver to just stop and let pedestrians cross. Else they may think you will stop and cross anyway and then you end up in jail
