Thread: Non USB keyboard

    Default Non USB keyboard

    Hi
Does anybody know, what might be wrong with my keyboard. Its a non usb one, the ones with the purple and green ports.

When i plug in the keyboard, the lights of the keyboard light up, but thats about it. The mouse also does nothing, despite the red light being on.

Is there a way around this, or is there an issue somewhere with my pc or ports?

all depends how old the KB and mouse are the older ones needed a driver.
You can buy a cheap crap KB and mouse for like R60.

I hope you did not plug it in while the Pc is on, could possibly blow the ports by doing so. Oftherwise try having it connected and restart the computer, if the ports are not blown and the keyboard and mouse is in working order then it should work.

Either the keyboard and mouse is dead (unlikely both of them went the same time), or the ports are blown on the motherboard. You can pick up a decent new USB one cheap, for 60 bucks (as pointed out by NomNom).

Or invest in a more expensive cordless one, for between R200 and R300 for a compo keyboard + mouse, which uses a single USB receiver. This is the better option if your PS2 ports are blown, and you have a limited number of USB ports.

Are you able to enter the BIOS at PC startup (pressing the DEL or F2 key)? I've recently come accross a similar issue on a PC. Only difference is that the USB ports also seemed to be not working. I was almost stumped when inserting a PCI USB card and still could not get any input from the keyboard or mouse. After some head scratching, it turned out that a virus (which had been cleaned) had munched through various system files taking out basic IO drivers in the process viz. keyboard and mouse etc. An OS reinstall was in order and solved the problem.
As one becomes more specialised one tends to be less generally understood and more commonly misunderstood.

I always class Keyboards and mice under consumables. They don't last long.
If it's a software problem, it's usually/sometimes to do with the HID drivers (human interface driver) or a COM port conflict. Check those out.
If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.

In this case you need to post a disambiguated link or risk the possibility of this thread going off on a Sony PS2 tangent.

Okay, the best answer was to restart the pc. Bloody hell, talk about the bloody obvious. Lol
