Thread: Help finding Audio Amplifier

    Default Help finding Audio Amplifier

    Hey peeps,

Turning to my favorite forum and peeps for advice on a new audio amplifier.

As most know I am quite the gadget junkie. Unfortunately I am green in this area - probably due to now replacing them too often

I currently have a Sony 5.1 setup. It only has 2 x HDMI (passthrough) and lacks any form of mobile connectivity. Also no DTS.

I am looking for something with at least 4 x HDMI, DTS and would like A2DP for streaming from my phone. 1080p upscaling would be a bonus.

I am not brand loyal but it must be decent quality. Don't want budget stuff basically.

    5.1 minimum too.

I will keep using the existing Sony speakers as I want to put my budget into the amp for now. I will look at new speakers a bit later.

    Budget up to around R7k.

Any ideas guys? Would preferably like to pick something up (Gauteng area) today

Was looking at the Marantz at Dion Wired. NR1602 I think it is. Just lacks the A2DP but at R3k it seems to be a steal?

    TIA

I could not wait for a response. To impatient.

Ended up getting the Marantz SR5006

That is quite a good buy. If you lived in Cape Town, I would have made some suggestions, but Gauteng is a foreign country

Onkyo TX-NR509... Think Audiotronic is the guys up in Jo'burg. Should be in budget.

Thanks for the responses anyway guys.

They have it to me for R7k on the dot and included the Belkin Bluetooth adaptor so I can play music via the amp using A2DP.

Is a rather impressive receiver. Just finished the initial setup and time to try content

I wanted a Yamaha but struggled to find one. Sony I have had enough of. Was keen to try something different

Nice purchase. Wish I had to money now to go get something decent too.

Where did you get it from?

    Dion Wired Woodmead.

I saw this amp when I walked in the store, then saw the price tag (R11k) and continued walking

Sales dude came to assist and recommended this model based on features I was after and said it was on special at R8k. I told him R7k including the Bluetooth add-on. He disappeared to speak to a manager and came back with a yes

Whatever their reason for giving me such an awesome discount is beyond me. Was grateful though.

He did say they were struggling to sell these units because of the hectic price tag.

    Nice deal.

What speakers you have running with it now?

Eish.. of those 2 I'd only look at that Yamaha... Sony make really average stuff, no real decent sound quality from them in my opinion. (unless you're looking at the higher end stuff from Sony)

The original Sony setup. Active sub, tall boy fronts. 2 surround. They not bad. Pretty decent sound.

I am planning on getting a set of Jamos but part of the next spend.

The sound quality is like chalk and cheese on this Marantz vs my old Sony. Sound separation also way better.

I have not spent too much time configuring so sure I could get it even better. Bit of a n00b on the sound front

Emotiva seems like a good buy from what I have read online.

+1 As I always say "Ek sounie!"
I suffer from CDO, it's like OCD, but in the correct alphabetical order.
