Thread: Secondhand Polo 1.6 comfortline 2011/2012 or brand new Kia Rio 1.4 tec 2012

  1. #1

Question Secondhand Polo 1.6 comfortline 2011/2012 or brand new Kia Rio 1.4 tec 2012

I'm looking at buying either a Secondhand Polo 2011/2012 1.6 comfprtline or brand new Kia Rio 1.4 tec 2012, whats your opinion?
I love the polo but I have to buy it secondhand and add a service or maintenance plan. The Kia comes with alll the bells and whistles, including service plan and leather seats which I would love and cant get with the polo. I love the smooth ride that you get from a polo and even though I'm considering it as an option I have yet to drive a Kia Rio (I will on Monday). I'm assuming it should feel pretty decent especially being a new car. I love the look of the polo, I only like the Rios back and not really the front. The polo I think comes with 15inch wheels and the Rio 17inch. Now as with the Ford fiesta, why are you getting all of these things 'for free'? Is the polo just expensive or is the Rio cheap? I love the idea of having a brand new car but my budget is no more than R190 000.00 and the Polo without service or maintenance plan is R200 000.00, the Rio R175 000.00. I can get a secondhand Polo relatively new for about R175 000.00 and add a maintenance plan for R11 000.00 some change.
    What do I do?
Have you had or do you own either of the two?
I've heard insurance is cheaper with the Rio and the hijackers like the polo. But I've also heard resale value you cant beat a polo.

    Help please.

You seem to have done your homework so drive them both and go with what the heart tells you (as long as its in budget).

Personally I'd go for the Rio as it is faster and more powerful than the 1.6 Polo! (79KW, 11.1s vs 77KW 11.3s, VW puts ancient engines in the Polos) It also has a lot more features and service plan as you mentioned. Only problem with the Rio is there is a waiting list.

Also take a look at the Cerato as it is a segment above and will rape both of them in all departments. It goes for R186k but they are offering R15k cash back as a new model is coming out towards the end of 2012/2013.

PM Killadoob as he just got one.

Thanks, I didn't even know about the waiting list. And Í'll check out the Cerato, I like the idea of it eating the other two in the spec department and I dont know anybody that doesn't like cash back!

Personally I would not touch the old big brands anymore (VW, Toyota, etc) as they are overpriced. I had a budget of R240K in Feb for my new car and Korean brands left everything else for dead. If I where to be buying in your price range today, I would only consider the Kia Cerato.

As for the waiting list, rather get what you want even if it means waiting for it. Its seldom you will be able to get a Korean model same day as they are all very popular.

(I ended up going entry level i10 as my car is only used on Saturdays to drive the kids around)

I've got the 2011 polo 1.4 comfortline and got it with 2 year extended maintanance plan and 3 year paint protection plan for 10k extra. i am really impressed with the soft ride and its very nippy for a 1.4. i must say the new polo is 1 of the hottest looking cars around. only issue i have with it is that it lacks the power sometimes if i want to put the foot down. i was surprised when we took a trip to hermanus when hitting speeds of 140km-160km there was no shaking of any sorts. it just goes when you go through the gears when hitting your speeds. fuel comsumption is of the best out there.

i also wanted to go for the rio, but the waiting list put me off as i don't want to wait 6 months or so. by that time newer models comes out and then the current ones looks abit oldish.

In that price range, I agree with above. Cerato 1.6 hatch or sedan...

I am struggling to see your point?

Che23p said a polo with MP is over 200k.

You asked why? and stated your 1.4 was R150 000.

So I told you why. The 1.6l polo he wants is over 200k with MP.

the polo has a more upmarket feel to it, but the kia is just far more value for your money. the rio is also bigger inside than the polo, the kia comes with a service plan and 5yr warranty
    Me fail English? That's unpossible.

Between those to definitely the Kia, you get way more car for your money. Alternatively, if you want a German car, check out the Corsa Essentia. They should be able to sell you one for about R160k and it gives you more than a Polo does.

I agree with most of the posters above. The Kia is the better choice. I want to something though. Cost of insurance will be higher on the polo due to how much hijackers like them.
