    Default I Love Source Engine

Whatever engine they used to make Half Life 2, I think is a remarkable achievement. I find it so smooth and slick and there is no lag even when things are rendered beautifully.

What are some other games made using this or updated version of this engine?

I just finished playing HL2: EP1 and now am downloading EP2.

All of the Valve games essentially.

    So team fortress 2, portal 1 & 2, left 4 dead 1 & 2, Counterstrike Source etc.

And yes, its pretty cool & versatile. Starting to show its age though. Hopefully with HL3 they'll launch a new engine.

Back in 2004, Source was an amazing engine comparing to other game engines. It still is 8 years later

I love L4D2 and TF2, they both still look amazing on the Source engine.

Don't act like it's the best engine out there.
And runs in OpenGL, so it works on PC, Mac AND FRIEKING LINUX!

CryEngine 2 (Crysis 2) and the upcoming CryEngine 3 (Crysis 3) and don't forget the Unreal Engine 4.0. These 3 engines alone put the Source engine to shame
And thats the bottom line, cause StoneCold said so...

Ok yeah in terms of graphics of course. But I have played Crysis 2 and I don't like the way it plays; if you know what I mean.

Though that's the gameplay not the engine, if developers wanted they could get the same "feel" in the Source Engine and vice versa.

The Source Engine was fair when it was released but quickly fell behind. It had dynamic terrain which was uncommon but not as good as in Geo-Mod from 2001. Its mod friendly and its built in lip syncing (facial animation) was a nice touch and still a plus. Other than its got nothing to be impressed by, certainly not today. These days you can even get third party facial animation/lip-syncing for engines and for modding I can't think of any as good as Gamebryo and the Creation Engine. No point in going into what it lacks because that would be a long list even without doing research.

So basically the Source Engine hasn't really had anything going for it for ages, though personally I think more should take its approach to facial animation. Someone might say it has low hardware requirements as a plus but it would take a large paragraph elaborating on why that bounces between useless and untrue due to things like current low end hardware and the higher efficiency of modern engines.

That said they did a really great job making Half Life 2 look good with what they had. They've never been the kind that advances graphics or engine technology. There is something to indicate that Source 2 is in development which would be a good thing since its long overdue. Something on that here http://www.valvetime.net/threads/exc...opment.215336/

When half life 2 first came out, it was the daddy. Way better than the rest. The only competitor was doom 3 at the time, and even that could quite reach the level of HL2. I honestly believed it was close to photo real. Obviously now though, it doesn't come close. But I think that was due to the fact that I hadn't seen anything better. I reckon the games we see now that have "amazing" graphics will look horrible in 8 years time too.
