Why I’m cancelling my Telkom ADSL
With better value available on mobile broadband, the numbers just don’t add up

Makes sense if you have coverage. At my place, I don't have 3G coverage on any of the networks.
Agree that if you don't use much data, Telkom uncapped is not the way to go. It isn't anyway.
If you're an average ADSL user, I agree, ADSL is expensive but if you're pulling more than 3GB a month (or 100 times that) there is no comparison.
Also having worked with both my smartphone and 3G enabled notebook in various locations I have never found the connection to be as reliable as fixed line.

ADSL is by far a better option. It simply can't be beat for reliability, latency and sheer volume of data that you can use.
Using the internet for some of the things it is meant to be used these days invalidate any, but any 3G broadband deal out there on value and practicality.
-Videos on YouTube
-Automatic windows, application, game updates
-Internet Radio
-Skype video chats
-On-line Gaming
-Buying apps, games and videos on-line through stores like Steam or directly from companies such as Blizzard
I'm sorry... Show me the 3G deal that can deal with all that... I don't expect to live in tomorrow, but I definitely do not want to live in the past. If our scum bag telecom regulators can't get their act together and do the obvious things for human decency then what can I do? I pay the scum bags. I'm not going backwards if I can help it, but they can go to hell.
+1
Also, his figures don't add up... or at best, are exaggerated.
in the very near future (after Telkom Line upgrades) a 1mb uncapped account plus line rental will cost R344pm, then add in the R150pm for Phone Line (Which a lot of houses would be paying for regardless), and you have R495pm for a line that you could comfortably pull 200gig from.
There's no 3G solution that can come close to that.
For Joe Soap, who only uses a couple of gig pm, then obviously uncapped isn't the way to go, and I suspect that there cheaper capped accounts (and the likes of the free data offers from FNB) that would still be preferable to 3G at home.
3G is for Mobile, Fixed line is for home.
I've been on Cell-C 3G for a year and it's been very reliable - and very fast - 8-16Mbps.
I have a static 3G/WiFi AP + Antenna.
It's for people who use 20GB-30GB per month.
The qualifying criteria are:
1) You use less than 30GB/per month
2) You have good signal strength (Use an antenna if necessary) - which give 4Mbps-16Mbps.
NOT using Telkom POTS or ADSL since 5 Sept 2011![]()
FYI: Telkom ADSL "legal" contention ratio is 20:1
If a mobile can crack the 'unlimited access' conundrum at reasonable prices, they've got my business.
fortunately have 8ta. and its faster than the 1mbps adsl but if the wife agrees then i will rather pay the dstv subscription towards an uncapped line and then provide content that way. wife will be on maternity leave for 6 months so i cant switch to compact. unless the wife agrees of course and use the difference to get content. but dammit i will miss HD sport![]()
...in other words, cancel DSTV?
Agreed.
