Thread: The Whoosh is so close, yet so far?

Default The Whoosh is so close, yet so far?

I'm from Steynsrus and if you look at the coverage map, there's red all around it...

I've bought a CellC starter pack, loaded 50 Meg for R10. I'm trying to find the signal in the area, but I'm having problem with the Vodafone software. MDMA, gives some 3G signal but it has no operator and I can't connect. Not sure if that's vodacom's 3G signal or CellC's, but it does look weaker.

Is there any kind of signal amplifier which could work, or am I out of luck for now. I'm gonna be so happy if CellC 3G becomes available here. I'm kinda getting sick of paying Vodacom their premium...

I also consider the 15c a meg revolutionary for gaming in SA, lanning perma internet requirement games might actually be viable!

If MDMA shows no operator name, it normally means the signal is from another operator. Can you try with a Vodacom or MTN SIM?

Best to use a high gain external antenna aimed at the tower, but you'll need to find where it is first.

What make and model of modem do you have? Does it support UMTS 900?

I tested it on my laptop, with a K3565 rev 2.

The vodacom sim detected Vodacom as operator on the3G.
The Cellc sim just showed 3G without an operator.

    I also have a K4505-Z
    and
    K3772-Z(still sealed...)

Not sure if you must change something first when trying to connect to CellC 3G with mdma.

The vodafone software, gave that sim error.

In MDMA select 2G-only, see if you can register to Cell C. Then change back to 3G, in case modem was stuck on 2100MHz but Cell C uses 900MHz. If doesn't help
For K3565 (Huawei, but not for ZTE modems (model number ending with -Z) press button Band config. Change from "auto" to "custom", remove check marks on all UMTS frequencies except UMTS 900MHz, press OK. This will force modem to search signal on 900MHz. When Cell C is registered, you can revert back to "auto".

Never try above with ZTE modems!

I can find the Cell C 2G network. Not the 3G one though. Gonna have to search for the tower though.

Don't use the Vodafone software, use the CellC software.

If you have a notebook, get on your roof outside when do these tests. If you get just 1 bar of Cell C 3G, an external antenna will sort you out.

Can't seem to get the CellC software installed. Requires specific modems...

For Huawei modem models you can use Mobile Partner.

Drivers had been installed by Vodafone software. All you need is unload it from memory, so your modem can be seen by other software. Change these options:
    - do not load on startup
    - unload from memory when exit.
Then exit Vodafone, you can use any software you like: MDMA, CellC, unbranded Mobile Partner (for Huawei modems).

Checked the coverage map, some of the red just vanished...
There isn't by any a chance to view the coverage map if CellC in timeframes? I want to see how they are expanding their freestate networks.

Start by testing in a cellphone. lol than you'll know if there's 3G coverage or not. If cellphone works than its a question of getting the software working....

Now if you have confirmed coverage we know its a software problem. Got to disable the vodacom service. and than just use the windows connection manage in the system tray to connect. thats what I do and I have a branded vodafone dongle

Check the coverage today, and the red seem to have returned. Having it so close to town is pretty mean lol...

I have CellC owned towers in Lindley, Ventersburg and Kroonstad and also at Mooidam. There may be other non CellC owned towers. What CellId are you getting with MDMA?
