Mweb Email troubles

Hello all , I come with a question.
Is there and way I can recieve emails from the mweb email adress (@mweb.co.za) via outlook or thunderbird while not actually on the mweb account ?
I want to move ISPs but will have to keep a 1GB account to hold on the the email adress. I have been testing with a free afrihost account and Web africa prepaid account and with neither will outlook or thunderbird will recieve or send messages.

If you set it up correctly you will be able to download messages from the mweb address from any internet connection.

However to send emails - you need to use the mweb smtp server and authenticate.

As requiem as mentioned above, your email should work if you set it up correctly.

Use the MWEB server to pop your incoming mail - pop3@mweb.co.za
To send mail, use the SMTP server of the connection you using to connect ie: Afrihost or Web Africa.

We do not allow customers using another ISP to authenticate to our SMTP servers for security reasons.

Because I can send emails from my Mweb address with all of those ISP's

You should be able to send from your MWEB email address if you using any of those providers to connect.

As long as the SMTP server you use to send, is the SMTP server of the provider you are connected with. (ie: Vodacom 3G, Afrihost, FNB connect, Web Africa, and IS...)

Do I really need to go post logs for you to believe me?

I am using SMTP.MWEB.CO.ZA

And authenticating with my logon.

Agreed... I am doing the same.

And to suggest they use another open SMTP server to send email is part of the reason EMAIL is so bloody unreliable.

But to answer the OP's Question - Yes you can.

Make sure you use imap.mweb.co.za or pop3.mweb.co.za is the incoming server. You can use your current provider's SMTP server to send to from your MWEB account or you can use smtp.mweb.co.za and tick the box 'outgoing server requires authentication'. Thats what's been working for me.

I get worked up when company representatives give inaccurate information..... (pet peeve of mine).

@ OP, if you start using another ISP's email address, when you do eventually use MWEB as an ISP again, be aware that they capture all port 25 traffic and force it onto their own SMTP server (this of course they claim to also do for security).

Click Tools - Accounts - [the name of your e-mail account] - Servers.
Leave your Incoming mail (POP3) as is.
Make a note of your Outgoing mail (SMTP) setting (you'll need it when you come back from your overseas trip) and then change it to: ipass-smtp.mweb.co.za (this should be all in lowercase).
Tick My server requires Authentication.
Select the OK button to continue.

As an IT Consultant and long time IT support technician, I would strongly suggest Mweb changes that recommendation. Your recommendation applied back in the day when we had a computer at home and a computer at work, but not in today's device landscape. The simple fact is that people roam across connections with their laptops, smartphones and tablets all day long.

Changing SMTP details every time you move from one connection is a chore, not to mention, out of the reach of most users.

1. At work they use the business Wifi. The Firewall blocks all port 25 traffic as a good security practice. The business does not allow them to use the company smtp server.
2. At home they use Mweb ADSL, where Mweb redirects all port 25 traffic to spam firewalls. using authentication will allow for more reliable email delivery, rather than taking the chance of your email falling foul of an spam firewall.
3. on the road they use a vodacom 3G connection.

I suggest that you advise users (and setup the systems accordingly) to use port 587 with Authentication, or better yet, port 465 with TLS encryption, for sending of mail though a Mweb server. That way the user always uses the same settings and it works in a reliable fashion.

It will make the lives of your users and of the IT professionals supporting them, a whole lot easier.
