Welfare SPCA dogs?

We are looking for a new dog to join our family, our male dog is besides himself with grief after our loss, he really is lost..didn't think it was possible but seeing is believing how miserable he is. I would like to adopt a dog, preferable one who has been waiting for awhile for a family, not a puppy and I know we offer a great loving home for any pet however, the husband not that keen. He is very worried we get a 'dud' dog that might come with issues (wtf ever that means but anyhow)...also, our male has never known or met another dog besides our female and I'm wondering if he will be ok with a newcomer.

I know these shelter dogs are known to be wonderful pets but has anyone had any bad experiences?? Also, where would you recommend we look in ct area? The are so many shelters, how do we choose?

Yep, I have been trawling their Facebook page as well as aacl, SPCA, paws, lucky Lucy etc etc, there are just so many, it's quite overwhelming. It's very hard to choose one when there are lots that are all described as being awesome dogs kwim?

We got our last dog from the Animal Welfare Society as a puppy. Absolutely no problems, with the added benefit that he had all his "shots" and was ready to go!

I don't think you should have any problems and regarding your current dog,maybe a little awkwardness in the beginning but they should quickly become friends

We have brought home 2 dogs from Spca for my folks, both have been well accepted and the dogs are well mannered.

They are so gentle especially when you give them food, they don't grab and gulp but take it so gently...compared to our two dogs we have at home the one's from spca are angels.

Just be sure to get another female. And I'd suggest you watch the new dog at feeding time at the SPCA before adopting it because this is where the fights might take place, if at all. Good on you for saving an animal - thumbs up...

I went through this recently. My advice is to STOP looking online. Gumtree, Facebook, etc just make you sad. Rather go to one or two shelters and meet the dogs there. You'll connect with one and that will be yours. You can specify age etc when you go there.

I got our new dog from the Animal Anti-Cruelty league in Epping. You go there and visit with the dogs for as long as you like. Choose 1 or 2 or 19. They send a person to checkout your house the next day. The guy who came to our place just looked over the wall. We didn't even know he'd been and gone. They 'fix' the dog you choose and then you take it home.

We got a 6 month old puppy who was a bit nervous at first. He snapped at me and the kids a few times but after growing up fighting for food at the shelter it's to be expected I think. Within a month he was 3 kilo's heavier and completely fine and happy.

What area are you in i have a female puppy looking for a good home (pavement special lovely little puppy a bit shy but she is a lovely dog)
She will grow in to a medium size dog ,she is about 6 months old.

Thanks, thats what Im hoping. Im worried I will find it very stressful trying to choose a dog and rather hoping that a dog chooses us because yep, its very hard to look at the faces online of all the dogs. Im glad to see no-one has had any issues.

A younger dog might be easier to integrate with your existing dog...

Yeah a younger dog will probably be much easier to integrate than an older one.

I rescued my boy from the SPCA, and I do want another one, but it will be a puppy.. then there will be no issue with who is dominant etc etc to start with, so they can get "used" to each other before that becomes a problem.
