    Hi chrisc4290!

    We have 3 more towers planned for the Plumstead area. These do take a while to implement. With one of the towers we have requested to share with another mobile operator which will not take as long as starting from scratch, but this does take a while for approvals,rental agreements and installing new equipment (could take up to 3 months).

    If thats the case, I do I get faster speeds. Would love 1mb/s+ speeds.
    Hi getafix33!

    Please can you go to www.speedtest.net and share the results with us? 1mb/s is equivalent to a 10MB connection. A 500kb/s connection = a 5MB connection which is more than acceptable on a 3G service.

    850 KB/s is roughly 7.2 Mbps, if you take network data into account(6.8 Mbps if you don't).

    Yeah, getting downloads at less than a megabyte per second will be your max.

    Lately I started getting in the evenings speeds comparable to a dial-up line. 20k downloads and so on. Suddenly after 12:00 midnight the speed jumps and I'm getting good speeds again. I can throw a stone and hit my tower. So, antenna will not help at all. This only started about 1.5 months ago.

    I would use 8ta immediately if I could get a decent signal at my house. Since the closest tower is 2.2km away, it is a bit poky to say the least. I miss the "coverage area" by a supposed 150 metres. However, even people who are well within the coverage area, although at the outside edge get frequent disconnects.

    If 8ta could get a fast roaming arrangement then I would be in like a shot, but the 10Gb offer is for 8ta transmitters only

    Fast roaming is for standard bundles only and Blackery. But here MTN special bundle is better @R189 2GB. I hear there will be new offers from 8ta soon.

    In general, download speed = Internet (Line) speed / 8.

    4MB Line = 4096 / 8 = Max: 512kb/s download speed (Although, closer to 400kb/s realistically)

    --------- And back to the original thread -------

    It's 3G - Sometimes you get fast speeds (I normally get +- 400kb/s+ dl speeds), sometimes you...

    Don't (Seems to be an off night - 20kb/s DL speeds *Shrugs*)

    Besides - This is a 3rd world country.

    If you want speeds like

    You should move.

    (For additional impact, look at distance from server in each image)

    Side Note: Was chatting to a guy in Sweden today - His phone on an LTE network gives him reliable 5500kb/s download speeds.

    Some of the speed issues *might* be hardware related:

    I was using a Huawei E172 modem (max 7.2Mbps = 900KB/s download speed):
    On Vodacom I got ~4Mbps= 500KB/s; and
    On 8ta I got ~2Mbps = 250KB/s.

    On my Huawei R201 (max 21.1Mbps = 2.637MB/s = 2637KB/s download speed):
    On Vodacom I now get ~10Mbps = 1.25MB/s = 1250KB/s; and
    On 8ta I now get ~5Mbps = 625KB/s.

    So... On a 4096kB line you get a max d/l speed of 64kB/s. Why do they call it a 4MB line?

    No, the max is 512 KB/s.

    4Mbps = 4096kbps = 0.5MB/s = 512KB/s

    Mbps = megabits per second
    MB/s = megabytes per second
    Kbps = kilobits per second
    KB/s = kilobytes per second

    8bits = 1 byte.

    Yes. That is how I understood bits and bytes. But if you read 8ta and Reelix's posts, you can understand the confusion. I tried to put their info into perspective. I thought I was missing something, but it would seem they got their bits and bytes messed up

    My bad! \o/

    It was more a quick post for those "Why can't I download at 10,000KB/s on my 10Mbps line!!!" people

    Just stay away from Kibi's and Mibi's (Mebi's?), and I'll remain calm ;D
