Thread: Ford fiesta 2006 1.6 TDCi maintenance

  1. #1

Question Ford fiesta 2006 1.6 TDCi maintenance

I am able to get a fiesta 2006 TDCi, 99000KM at a good price from a dealer, but I'm worried about the maintenance since it's a diesel, I have the option of a 2007 petrol version with slightly less KMs but R20k more. should I go with the petrol instead?

Some reviews mentioned the diesel not being as reliable as the petrol, so would like to know if it's true or not.

I like diesel too, so I would go for the diesel one.
On 99 000Km it should've went in for it's major service. Just make sure before you buy.
If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun.

Will do, but I'm getting conflicting answers about the tdci model, some say it's not reliable rather stick with petrol...

I would be hesitant to buy a 2006 diesel, only because I wouldn't know the previous driver's habits, for example 500ppm vs 50ppm diesel, allowing turbo to cool after spirited driving, accelerating gradually etc etc. I have the 1.4 TDCI from brand new, so I know exactly how I drive her. Any possibility of an extended warranty? You dont want a turbo or injector pump failure, big dollars. At that age (7 yrs old) I would be more inclined for the petrol model, just my 2c worth.

I'll need to confirm the warranty, but yeah that's my worry too, diesel maintenace... it's a 1.6 though. But since it's cheaper than the petrol I might save big on fuel costs though... decisions

The maintenance is the least of your worries, it's mechanical failure on diesels that can remove arms and legs. I've heard good things about the 1.6 TDCI, your best bet is to search a local Ford forum and check the quirks regarding that specific model.

I was actually looking at the 2.0 TDCI Focus model, am a bit wary of diesel reliability as well

I believe diesels are generally reliable, it's the cost to repair should something happen to go wrong vs the cost of petrol repairs that scares many.

It's also model specific, there are some lemon motors out there like the TD5 land rover motor vs the 300TDI motor, etc. Researching model specific forums should steer you clear of these lemon models.

Just got burnt and paid school feels on a Jetta 4 TDI.
120 000kms and usually these things are reliable, but when they go they go..
Turbo +/- R6-7k, other damage from blown turbo.. total bill R20k..
Ended up selling the car instead as is and taking a R15k loss.

Mechanic suggested a Fiesta for a cheap fuel efficient run around.. though told me to stay away from all diesels in general and go for a 1.4 fiesta cos "those engines go and go and go" and are cheap to maintain.
