replacing copper wire with fibre would definitely make sense in high density areas and places where cable theft occurs often...

Its nice to know that Telkom is replacing the old units with nice new MSAN's, but they also need to upgrade their actual exchange capacity!

Its all good and well upgrading these exhanges, but there are still exchanges that can hardly stay at 4 meg, in popular areas! When will these be upgraded... Ive been waiting for 10 meg for ever!

And I've been waiting for any form of an ADSL line since April!

The MSAN replaces the 'actual' exchange as it becomes the exchange.

What type of CPE modem would be required? - Most consumer and business modems and router that are ADSL2+ only do up to 24mbps....

It replaces a DSLAM inside an exchange. The exchange still needs to be connnected with enough bandwidth to the rest of the network.

Do a google search for a VDSL2+ modem, or FTTC (Fibre to the curb) DSL modem.

It looks like the modem telkom is giving to the guys on the trial is: Pace 921VNX router from the VDSL Feedback thread.

    And the new softswitches?

Which level exchange are you referring to? Concentrator, DSSU, DPSU, etc?

Congratulations to the 0.0001% of South Africans who will actually benefit from this!

Currently it is only 0.0001% who benefits, but as the rollout continue, most ADSL users will benefit from these MSANs. For once, I am willing to skip the 10 mbps upgrade and rather wait for the MSAN to be installed near my house.

As the name implies, a softswitch is software, so I'm not sure why you mention that.

I'd think an MSAN has it's place in any level exchange. Telephone/DSL/etc lines still need to be terminated, regardless of where in the network topology the exchange fits in.
