America’s secret stash of oil

That two trillion barrels of formerly useless shale oil has been lying under the USA’s Colorado Green Mountain is not news. It is not news that it is the largest untapped oil reserve in the world, sitting a thousand feet under the Rocky Mountains. Official estimates:
* 8-times as much oil as Saudi Arabia
* 18-times as much oil as Iraq
* 21-times as much oil as Kuwait
* 22-times as much oil as Iran
* 500-times as much oil as Yemen

So - it only becomes economically viable to extract it when the price of oil gets to a certain level right? Same with the UK's North Sea afaik - or at least thats what we were told in school back in the 90's.

The shame is if this detracts attn away from alternative energy sources.

afaik canada has the largest shale reserves in the world. The problem is seperating the oil from the sand, which atm is a very expensive process. As oil nears $100/barrel these costs become less of an issue.
