Hi all

So my Samsung 27" monitor died 3 months out of its 3 year warranty. I spoke to the guy at the repair shop and he said it wasn't worth repairing. He also said that I should look at LCD tvs instead of actual monitors for when I buy next. he says they are cheaper. Just wondering, what does the hive mind think of this? Is there any difference to LCD tvs and monitors?

It's to plug my macbook pro into, and while i would dearly love the Apple monitor (just because it looks so crisp), there's no way I'm shelling out 20k for a monitor.

TV's are not cheaper than monitors last time I checked. Plus a monitor is made for PC, unless the TV comes with a "we also go on PC's yo!"

the repair guy was talking **** IMO

It might be more expensive per inch for a monitor but good luck finding a good quality TV that is less than 30" for a cheaper price than a sub-30" monitor (unless you really really want a 32"). Also if you can please please do yourself a favour and get a 16:10 aspect ratio monitor. You will thank me...

You can get that Apple monitor for R13k, whoever was offering it for R20k was trying to rip you off. Alternatively there is the Dell U2713HM at R6.5k. It uses the same panel as the Apple (an LG LM270QW1), so it gives you the same display quality at half the price.

The smaller TVs (up to 32 inch) have gone up in price and they are no longer worth it as an alternative.

Have a look at 22 to 24 inch monitors instead, they offer some good value.

You would be surprised how cheaply a monitor can be repaired. Especially by reputable repair guys. CRT in Gauteng does official SAMSUNG repairs and warranty handling. You can get away for a couple of hundred Rand depending on what is wrong.

They will tell you the price of repair before hand so that you can decide.

I have used them on more than one occasion! Well worth it!

I agree with Antowan, get a second opinion by a company that actually specialises in these things. You'd be surprised how cheap the fixes sometimes are.

The guy at the repair shop is 100% correct. A 32" LCD TV offers far better value than a 27" PC LCD.

-Cheaper (in most cases)
-Bigger
-S-PVA (Samsung)/IPS (LG) panel vs TN (PC LCD)
-8-bit colour vs 6-bit
-It's a TV
-It has speakers
-It has a remote control
-It has many inputs

Just make sure you have a mimimum viewing distance of around 80cm. And that the TV is set to PC mode to disable overscan for true 1920x1080 and 1:1 pixel mapping.
