Hi,

I am staying with family at the moment, and the current networking setup is the following:

Area 1: Study
  • Telephone Line + Telephone
  • ADSL Filter
  • Netgear N600 ADSL Router
  • Desktop Computer

Area 2: Entertainment Area
  • Samsung 46" Smart TV

There is another termination point for the telephone line about halfway between area 1 and 2. (The house is L-shaped)

There are a number of WiFi devices connected (ie. 2 - 10 at a given time)
The WiFI signal is not great in the Entertainment Area, specifically for Smartphones/Tablets (the SmartTV cannot connect at all). Last time I was here, I ran a LAN cable from the Study to the Entertainment area so that the SmartTV could access the internet.

I have a Cisco (Linksys) WAG120N Wireless ADSL Router here that is currently being used, and would like to connect this up in the entertainment area to act as an access point or network extender for Cellphones, Tablets, Laptops etc. in the area to connect to.

I was thinking of connecting this router to the ethernet cable currently connected to the TV, and then plugging another cable from there into the TV (if there is space in the wall conduit to keep it looking neat).

Do these devices allow for this functionality? Or maybe only one of them. How do I go about setting this up, I am happy to swap the devices, ie. Cisco connected to telephone line and Netgear in the entertainment area (although the Netgear is massive so rather not if possible).

Set it up with same WiFi details as your other ADSL router, give it a static IP and disable DHCP service on it,it'll act like a dumb AP/bridge giving wifi to the room and it'll act like a switch for the TV

Keep DHCP enabled on your ADSL router, disable it on your second router that should be the only settings you need to change

Hi There,
All good advice above. I suspect though that you will have to put the netgear into bridge mode and you should run the wireless at least 4 channels apart.

Regards

Tim

you need to change the Ip address of your secondary router to be different from you primary
so if your primary (net gear) Ip is 192.168.1.1, make sure the secondary (linksys) is set to 192.168.1.2
enable DCHP on primary and start ip address must be 192.168.1.3, the secondary must be set to operating mode router (a apposed to gateway), disable DHCP on the secondary, and internet connection type should be auto (If applicable)

Then set up the secondary with exactly the same WiFi SSID and password as the primary only difference should be the channel

I got this setup working with 2 linksys routers.
If you have an android phone get an app called wifi analyzer ,it can check all the wifi signals in the area and recommend the best for each router too, I have a few neighbors with wifi so had to space mines far apart (1 and 11 IIRC)

Devices switch between each router seamlessly if moving around, and no need to setup different passwords etc

I have no network experience and manged this so its easy peasy lemon squeezey

Okay I've played around with a few settings, got it working fine with a different WiFi SSID, but was experiencing intermittent connectivity using the same SSID. For some reason when I set the Linksys (secondary) to use the same SSID, it seems to "hide" itself on the network.

Using one set of settings when I tried to access 192.168.1.1 (the Linksys router), it pointed me straight to 192.168.0.1. The Netgear.

I have set the Netgear at Channel 1, and the Linksys at Channel 11. WifiAnalyser shows no other WiFi signals in the area (property sizes are large here).

I am having endless issues with this Cisco Linksys WAG120N. Everytime I change the routers IP address (trying to change to 192.168.0.2 from 192.168.1.1), I can no longer access the router at all. The wireless network 'linksys' is available, yet when connected I cannot access the control panel from either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.2. I then have to reset the router on the reset pin (don't have a spare LAN cable on me).

Have only had the worst experience with these new Linksys routers, half the time you can't connect to the control panel at all. Hence why this one was brand new and sits in a cupboard.

I think this router is making a simple process into something very difficult. Everything is set up. Only one WiFi network is seen to my computer. I am sure I have done this with a D-Link and a Netgear before, I just set one to "Access Point" mode and it was good to go!

Android App WiFi Analyzer sees the network at Channel 1 and Channel 11. (same SSID)
My Samsung S4 is saying authentication error, yet both routers are set to WPA2-Personal / AES, with the exact same password.

I can't access either router control panel now, unless I turn off the Linksys secondary router, then I can access the Netgear fine again.
I have tried the DHCP on the secondary router as Off, as well as DHCP relay to the Netgear @ 192.168.0.1.

Starting to get frustrated. Do not really want to swap the routers around, as leaving this piece of *** as the primary router is not really the best option. Running out of ideas here? Will post some screenshots of the settings, perhaps there is something that I am missing.

I have reset the router, connected to ethernet after reset.

Broadcasts "linksys", no security, yet it has internet access if I connect to it.
My MacBook sees the Netgear router at 192.168.0.1, and I cannot access the Linksys at 192.168.1.1 (assume its trying to connect to an Internet location.)

Set the IP addresses as 192.168.0.x, set the primary routers DHCP on, turn off DHCP on the second router, that should be it.

Here is my setup
ADSL router set as DHCP with IP address 10.0.0.1
Wifi Router 1 DHCP off and IP address 10.0.0.2
Wifi Router 2 DHCP off and IP address 10.0.0.3

Where I think you are going wrong is that your one routers IP address is 192.168.0.x and the other is 192.168.1.x

Set the IP addresses as 192.168.0.x, set the primary routers DHCP on, turn off DHCP on the second router, that should be it.

I would never have bought this router, it was sold to a family member from a network solutions company at the office

Your primary router should be .1.1 your secondary should be .1.2. Dhcp on primary should assign ip's from .1.5 (allow for a few more static ip's for future). They should both use the same subnet 255.255.255.0. If either router doesn't allow you to change the ip then swap their master/slave relationship. I can't see that this is the case however. Are you sure your second router software allows bridged mode? If not, install ddwrt with obvious disclaimers.

Try taking the Netgear out of the equation for a while - Turn it off and use the same cable going into the linksys to connect into it via that port rather then over Wifi once you setup that all on the linksys, turn it off, then work on the netgear, make sure all that is fine then connect the 2 routers and reboot them
-
It could be that the Netgear assigned IP 192.168.0.2 to another devices, and even though you made start IP 192.168.0.3 it just didnt release that IP and casuing the error
