Thread: Some sort of point system

Default Some sort of point system

    Hey,

I was wondering if it's maybe possible for some point of system, for example, if someone is helpful or unhelpful they get/lose points. This is a great way of showing people that you appreciate their help, and also people are able to see who are the **** talkers and such.

    What do you guys think?

Good idea with an obvious good intention. Only problem as human beings there will be some who will find a way to use the system against those who differ in opinion. You know how it is, a debate gets a little heated, everyone is against one guys opinion and sudenly that guy is seen as sh*t talker

I just think that something like this might bring in a whole bunch of new issues, besides most of us know who tha bad guys are. I won't mention a certain "person" that we all know of for fear of leagal action against me! Bahahahahahahahaha

We had the karma system as a trial last year and it didn't work out, that was one of the reasons why. For example tibby.dude went into the red on the first day it was introduced, and that's before he even posted anything.

    EDIT: here we go
Some of the reasons why it didn't work out.

Procrastination is like masturbation. It may feel good at first, but when you look at the task at hand, you're actually screwing yourself.

Please lets not even mention the karma system again, some people loved it but most of us hated it. The more equal we are as members, the less problems are caused. No member is more important than another. (Even though some members might think they are).

I kinda like the kind of system as in the Trackmania games. You have multiple votes, but can not vote more than once for a specific player. You also can't remove a vote that you haven't casted, so it's geared towards the positive side of life As recipient your "stardays" is calculated as (number of votes * number of days since they were casted), After let's say 10 stardays you're awarded 1 star, 100 stardays 2nd star, etc.
so if 10 people vote for you on the same day, you'll get your 1st star the next day and the 2nd after 10 days. Removing your vote might cause the recipient to lose a star

Also what might work is people get a limited amount to use, therefor they have to use them carefully, similar to how Slashdot works

Yes, we can rate threads. Thats not so bad. But when you give people the ability to give you negative karma just because they don't like or agree with something you say is plain silly. I personally don't need points to validate me as a member of MyADSL. Neither does anyone else.

If you're around long enough you'll develop your own reputation - good or bad. Thats good enough for me.

The karma system was abused straight out of the gate and hopefully that experience wont soon be repeated.
