I have a netgear DG834GT, and it works really well. Runs linux and is easy to get to and modify if you are into that kind of thing.

Watch out for the phone cables supplied with them, mine was defective and so was a friend's who has exactly the same model.

They are not defective, u have to connect them correctly. Duxbury has started including a photocopy of the correct connection diagram.

I will not go for a D-Link. Rather go for a Billion 7300G.

Some of the Wireless Billion routers have range problems but I am not sure of the new 7300Gs.

Billion_Tech?

Matt, I'm using the DSL-G604T in my home for 2 years now, and it covers 700 square meters perfectly. The odd firmware upgrades done every 6 months ensured me that my unit is up to date when Telkom changes something on their network.

Havnt had alot of complaints about the range on the 7300xx... Busy testing new F/W for the 7300G and looks like the wireless range is better as well. F/W will be available in a couple of weeks.

I use the Linksys WRT54G with a Billion 5102S modem. Works like a charm.
Can also get different software for the WRT54G from openwrt.org.

I'd go with Netgear over D-Link, just from what I've heard and my own experience with Netgears. They're rock-solid reliable and Netgear offers very good support. A friend of mine had trouble with a particular type of connection he was trying to make and Netgear sent him an updated firmware that couldn't be downloaded from their site just for that purpose (it altered the MTU size or something for him).

As far as the filter supplied with the router - I'd stick with plugging the router straight into the wall socket and putting the phone through a Telkom filter. I have had one or two synch problems using the Netgear micro-filter (yes my wiring was correct).

OMW That is exactly my setup :) Oh wait kind of I have the 5102 not the 5102S

I have to say it does work like a "charm"

I know a company that supplies wifi solutions to hotels. They supply only D-Link or SMC. Try and go for one that has removable antenna. That way you can hook a high gain antenna (yagi) if needed. They all have one internal antenna for local signal, the stubbie is for range.
Just remember, a signal travels thru a 15cm wall when your signal is directly opposite. If a straight line to the signal is at a diagonal to the wall, it may travel thru meters of wall.
WiFi was born in a country with woodframe houses and drywall. Brick sucks.

You can change the MTU size anyway on any router....
Dnt know why you need special F/W for that?

Yeah no I said 'or something'.

I think it just changed the way the router dealth with certain frames/packets.

yeah they do work.....you just have to spend some time setting them up properly......

Any1 used the SMC wireless products?

my friend had s SMC router, had problems with it and swapped it out for a netgear! no problems since

I was just about to start the same type of thread. I'm totally new to broadband, routers etc etc and ordered ADSL earlier this month. I didn't expect an installation date so soon, but apparantly it's going to be the end of the month !

Anyway, I need a router and as mentioned - know NOTHING ! I can get Linksys at near to cost, so I was thinking of a wireless Linksys ? Is there a certain model I should look at ?

Thanks

It all depends what you want to use it for... Do you only need wireless or do you need VPN, VoIP etc?

I also have the Netgear DG834GT I haven't had any problems with it yet. Easy to setup and easy to change config. I baught the netgear after my Telscum one blew up.
