Hi guys,

I'm going to be new to the whole ADSL thing, and was wondering how this works.

A few months ago I bought a Gigabyte Wireless Router - GN-BR01G - http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Communication/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=978

On the router it has a port of WAN, which I'm guess is where you plug in the ADSL modem. The WAN port looks like a normal RJ45 connection. And then there are settings in the Gigabyte router software to setup the WAN stuff. I'd just like to find out how his works?

Do all standard ADSL modems have this connection to connect directly to a router with WAN support? Or do only specific modem support this? What do I need to look out for when buying my ADSL modem? What ADSL modems would you recommend for thise Gigabyte router?

Should I trash the Gigabyte router all together and purchase a brand new ADSL router that supports both wireless and LAN?

Thanks,
:L:

Hey there,

I have read the overview of the Gigabyte Wireless 'router' you pointed out in the URL.

Unfortunately the Gigabyte 'router' is actually an Access Point (WAP) and does not support any DSL capabilities. U can use that WAP only as a 10/100mb Switch, and a Wireless Access Point ONLY.

If u want to buy urself a nice ADSL router WITH Wireless Capabilities, the D-LINK DSL-G604T ADSL/Wireless Router will do more than fine.

I have setup 2 of those routers at our office and at home and its working BRILLIANT. It also have nice features.

You can purchase that router from Mustek. If ur lucky u can get it at Bethesda, or from a well known IT retailer.

That Sux!!

Thanks for the reply guys.

PHTech: Are you serious it's not a router? Cause the GN-BR01G is listed under the "router" section on Gigabyte's website. If it's only an AP, and not a router, then that sucks donkey balls!!!

Then what's the point of the WAN connection and Gigabyte stating on their website "With GIGABYTE’s AirCruiser G Router deployed in your home or office network, you’ll be able to enjoy sharing a broadband Internet connection over a secure wireless network within minutes". False advertising?

Guess I'll have to shell out for another ADSL router.

LandyMan: Thanks...that was the only wireless router (well now AP) at the time that I could get from Rectron. I haven't check if they have extended their range. Will try and look for that D-Link ADSL Wireless Router.

Any prices I should expect when purchasing an ADSL Wireless Router?

Thanks,
:L:

Strange, I bought my BR404W almost 2 years ago (from Rectron). Maybe its been discontinued

The model you listed does have router functions.

As such, you need a modem only, simply plug ADSL enabled telephone line into modem, then RJ-45 into modem and Gigabyte router. Then setup pppoe connection on the router and things should be working fine.

This is best performed through the routers web page, usually either 192.168.1.254 or 192.168.1.1 (you'll need to assign an IP to your PC assuming it dosent pick up an IP)

Then look for "WAN" settings, and configure accordingly (this board should have the Telkom ADSL settings in a post somewhere, or get them from Telkom themselves)

I just looked at the quickguide for said router, and it does support ADSL (the pic on the first page actually shows the router plugged into the ADSL modem).

So it should work ...

You'll need to connect to the modem with ethernet first, and set it to Bridge mode, and disable DHCP too (most likely). Then connect it to the router and set up PPPoE on the router.

Thanks for the extra responses.

rsachoc: Thanks for letting me know. I thought it had router functions. I also read that I'll need a cross over cable from the router to the modem, is that right? I'll get the WAN settings from the ISP I eventually sign up with.

killadoob: Nope, no gaming here, just multiple PCs in the house. All need access. Only two are connected via cable, the other 3 are connected via wireless.

Claymore: Bridged mode? Is that a setting on the router itself? I've looked through the config settings of the router and I haven't seen anything concerning bridged mode. I've disabled DHCP anyway. Each PC has an IP and I've set MAC security and WPA on the wireless. Everything is working fine, with the ISDN modem connected to the main PC and everything else connecting to the internet through there.

I still need to apply for my ADSL line (that might take a while), and once that's done, buy a ADSL modem - any suggestions for a good modem??? Then sign up with an ISP, and it looks like it'll be between ODS and OpenWeb.

Thanks,
:L:
