Default Help in using W850 to connect to the internet

I upgraded my phone last week to a Sony Erricson W850i and must admit that I am really happy with this phone thus far except for two minor issues. First being that its Vodafone branded and Vodacare refuses to unbrand it due to licence restrictions and secondly that Vodacom expects me to pay to download standard features of the phone from VLive.

Enough with the complaint however, on to my problem.

I'm attempting to use this phone as a modem for my home pc. The phone indicates that 3G is available in the area and I am able to view websites at reasonable speeds using the phone itself.

I have installed the software provided for the phone as well as the drivers on my pc and set up connections manually as well as using the Sony Ericsson connectivity wizards. Both these forms of connections seem to work in that my computer recognises that a connection has been established and the phone indicates I am connected to the web.

When I attempt to use IE, or any other internet related software for that matter, everything continuously times out as if I do not have a connection established. Does anyone know how to correct this?

I have attempted to change the APN for this connection to internet using extra settings for the modem. This results in no connection being established at all when I try to connect. Using the sony ericsson connection wizard to try and change this value from vlive to internet is also not allowed. Attempting to change these values on the phone itself is also restricted which leads me to believe that is is because of the vodafone firmware.

Querying the modem results in the following:
    ATQ0V1E0 - OK
    AT+GMM - Sony Ericsson W850
    AT+FCLASS=? - +FCLASS: (0)
    AT#CLS=? - COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED

Try your dial up number as: *99***2#
Use the extra settings for your modem as: AT+CGDCONT=2,"IP","internet"
    Lets see what happens

Enterting any value into the extra modem settings causes problems it seems. On connecting there is just a message that refers to a hardware failure. Changing the number which is dialed to does seem to work however. Will have to see at what speed the connection is established.

yup - v3g - I'm so serious about it, i'm up for renewal in April, and i would change networks to get my unbranded w850i (actually any new phone that i like)... do not like the vodafone software one bit!.

People should have a choice what software they have on their phones! - especially the fussy ones

Since you cant del/mod the preset Data Accounts (#1-4), just add a new one and use that. On my VLive V800 I've created a account called Vodacom VPN, put in internetvpn for the APN (cos I dont want a 10.x.x.x NAT addr). To connect I just dial *99***5# from my laptop (via Bluetooth or USB).
Still here ... FTL drives offline

I haven't been able to really test the connection much yet. It seems to work having changed the number that is dialed. Will do some speed tests today to evaluate everything.

LabAnimal - I went to Vodaworld in midrand to enquire about unbranding the phone. According to the technical manager at vodacare it can't be done because Vodacom doesn't have a license for the original software and the original firmware doesn't exist(yeah right). According to him Vodacom only has licenses to install the original software for the M600i and the P990 because the vlive firmware on these phones gave errors.

I didn't have the time or the inclination to put up a fight though and just left the store with my phone. I'll most likely go back when silly season is over and try again.

You can successfully unbrand the W850 and a whole range of Sony Ericsson phones using Da Vinci. I unbranded mine the same day I got it myself. There is a few threads on the forum re this under Cellphones.

Diago, What are the differences and why did you decide to reflash?
